6.35" Darryl Dean Begay Navajo Tufa Cast sterling silver Sugilite cuff bracelet. Ultra high grade Sugilite, Darryl Dean Begay only used the best. Cuff made purposely simple to showcase the wonderful stone. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures. Darryl Dean Begay is a renowned Navajo jeweler who has created his own niche in the Native American Art world using a variety of techniques, including the traditional Navajo tufa cast technique which dates back to the 1850s, the stone inlay technique, and the traditional Navajo silversmithing technique using chisels and file. Darryls jewelry designs are unique and rich in Navajo culture and set with the highest grade stones. Darryl first learned tufa casting from his uncle Bobby Begay in 1997. Darryl also learned from some of the best in the business. He creates one master piece at a time using only top grade materials. His knowledge of turquoise is superb as many collectors, friends, gallery owners and others have asked him to decipher or give his best guess of the type of turquoise found or used in their own collection. Lone Mountain turquoise is one of his favorite turquoise. Darryl loves being a jeweler and is very grateful to still be in the jewelry business since 1998. He has won numerous awards at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum Guild Fair & Market in Phoenix, AZ and at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, NM. Darryl and his wife, Rebecca T. Begay, who he also works with and who is also an accomplished jeweler, won the prestigious Best of Show Award at the 2009 Santa Fe Indian Market for a concho belt titled, “Return of the Long Walk, a tribute piece to the present-day Navajo people whose ancestors survived the Long Walk, some of which were the artists own relatives. This belt depicts each concho in human/figure forms rather than in the common circular or oval shapes, a style in which, mainly Darryl, has become known for. Darryl hopes to continue to create beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry for as long as he can or for as long as the Lord wills. Darryl has also passed on his tufa casting and jewelry-making knowledge by teaching others in his family who include his wife, Rebecca, his brother, Lee Begay, his cousin, Philander Begay and his youngest son, Robert W. Begay, all of whom are also talented artists. Darryl has also taught online and in-person classes to his followers on social media or any one interested in learning.

6.35" Dino Garcia Santo Domingo Tufa cast sterling silver cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Gilbert “Dino” Garcia Santo Domingo artist Dino Garcia, born in 1969, has been an active silversmith since the 1990’s. He learned the art of carving tufa molds and casting silver from his grandfather Leo Coriz (who learned the art from the renowned Hopi artist Charles Loloma). Gilbert “Dino” Garcia is one of only a handful of working silversmiths at Santo Domingo Pueblo. He works with both silver and gold and specializes in casting his pieces in hand-carved tufa stone molds. Dino’s pieces, however, are different from those of most sandcast artists. Dino uses a soft tufa which he digs at a location in Arizona shown to him by his grandfather. This soft tufa allows Dino to carve particularly detailed designs in the stone, but the very softness of the stone means that each mold is only good for casting one piece. Dino’s two-piece molds are carved on each side so that his pieces show carved designs on both sides; on the outside and inside, or front and back. Each piece of his is truly a one-of-a-kind work because the mold itself does not survive the casting process intact.

In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High School. “We used copper in the class, but thats where I got my start. I took the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap silver to work with, recalls Ernest. Ernests career in jewelry making didnt really take off until he entered some rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which helped him begin his career as jewelry artist. Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Ernest gets much inspiration from traditional and old jewelry styles. “Concho belts, squash blossoms, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and belt buckles, I do them all in my own signature old style series. This old style jewelry always caught my eye. I used to go to the Trading Posts just to look at some of the old pawn on display. The ones that caught my attention were always the pieces that used the thick silver, and the stamp work on them, says Ernest. Ernest now lives in New Mexico with his wife, Readda, and twins Ernest Jr. and Faith Begay.

6.35" Ric Charlie Navajo Tufa Cast sterling silver storyteller cuff bracelet. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century, collected and possibly never worn. Fantastic bracelet as shown. Ric Charlie is the most innovative jeweler of our time, utilizing the ancient technique of Tufa Casting. Ric creates multi-level dimensional jewelry by meticulously cutting the designs with flawless precision. Each design is hand cast, formed, filed, sanded, and polished to perfection. Finally, diamonds and semi-precious gemstones are set to accent each piece for sale to the discriminating collector. Ric Charlie is noted for his fine tufa cast work. His jewelry often has added colorful patinas in shades of gold, rust, red, purple, blue, and green, achieved by adding liver of sulfur to the silver. His pieces use Navajo landscape scenes, Yei Bi’Ci’s spiritual figures, and sand painting designs. The fine lines in his jewelry are accomplished by incising the tufa stone with the dental tools Ric has used for over 20 years. He uses a wide range of techniques, including mosaic, channel inlay, and set natural stones. Ric is also a painter and sculptor. Born in Tuba City, Arizona in 1959, Ric is of Tsi’naa’jinii’ (Black-Streaked-Wood-People) and Ta’baahi’ (Edgewater) Clans. Growing up under humble circumstances with his grandparents in the sun streaked red cliffs, Ric learned the traditional ways while watching the old ones slowly adjust to new technology and world ideas. He began experimenting with jewelry making and learned the basic techniques while in high school. He attended Arizona State University in Tempe and the University of Arizona in Tucson with sports scholarships. There, he formally studied jewelry making and design. However, in the area of tufa casting, Ric is largely a self-taught artist. The technique he uses was not part ofdio art curriculum. He apprenticed to other jewelers whose work he admired and set himself a goal of making his college stu the lines fine and clean. Ric has been a practicing jeweler since the early 1970s. Today, in addition to pursuing and perfecting his own career, Ric teaches and advises young Native artists from around the world on his distinctive tufa stone casting methods. During his lifetime, Ric has had a strong sense of being a part of Monument Valley and has felt like it was him home. So a lot of his work has the Monument Valley scenery. “Every time I feel down, I always think about my place in life, and I feel that I have something to give into this world…”

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.
