Fred Peshlakai Navajo (1896-1974) Biography sterling silver large hair barrette. Selling the piece shown in good condition with measurements in pictures. Weight and measurements in pictures.Peshlakai, Fred (1896-1974) BiographyFred Peshlakai is the bridge between the early Navajo silversmiths of the 19th century and the Native modernists of the mid 20th century. He was born at Crystal, NM, the son of Slender Maker of Silver who had learned silverwork from Atsidi Chon, one of the first Navajo silversmiths. He apprenticed with his father until the elder’s failing eyesight forced him to stop working. Peshlakai worked briefly at Maisels Indian Trading Post in Albuquerque before moving on to temporary jobs such as cowboying and acting. Returning to silversmithing, he opened a shop on Olvera Street in Los Angeles where he worked for nearly 20 years. His brother, Frank, worked for him there for several years. In 1950 Peshlakai had a shop at Hotel Escalante in Cedar City, UT. After that time his jewelry production decreased. Peshalakai’s work is widely collected because of his innovative designs and use of high quality stones.

Joseph began developing his craft in the mid-1960s while polishing his father's silverwork. His design style has evolved from the traditional Mimbres patterns to what he calls "pueblo geometric" designs of animal and water motifs. He learned from both his grandmothers the traditional pottery designs that he incorporates into his jewelry.LeJeune Chavez combines both of her tribal cultures using ancient pueblo designs and natural stones and shells. She and Joseph collaborate on jewelry creations.In Greg Schaaf's book American Indian Jewelry, he writes:"Kewa jewelry artist Joe Chavez began developing his craft over forty years ago. While polishing his father's silver work, he began to develop his own approach to working the metal. His design style evolved from the traditional Mimbres patterns associated with the southern pueblos to what he calls "pueblo geometric" designs of animal and water motifs, including his emblem design, the water bird. His hallmark is a strong raincloud.Although he has produced some jewelry with coral and turquoise, more in the style of Navajo work, Hoyungowa is a master silversmith which is evident in his traditional Hopi silver overlay technique jewelry. Hoyungowa actually learned silver overlay technique from Preston Monongye (his uncle and another famous Hopi artisan) and the Institute Of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.More History: The Indian Arts and Crafts Board (a government department) and the Hopi Tribe collaborated on the formation of the Hopi Silvercraft Guild in 1949 and noted Hopi artist Fred Kabotie became the manager. It was then that Hopi overlay jewelry found it acceptance.Hopi overlay technique involves cutting out the desired design in one piece of silver and overlaying that onto another piece that has been incised and oxidized. Polishing is accomplished with steel wool which results in a matte rather than a shiny surface.
