His bold and clean designs along with the precise matting or texture he worked into the negative areas of this pieces, made his work easily recognizable. His Hopi name was Masaqueva (Wings of the sun). He was born in the second Mesa village of Shungopavi. Not only a master jeweler, but a respected storyteller and a man of great talents. He passed away in 2010. His work is displayed in Museums across the country and in many publications.

Selling the set shown, only the pin is marked as shown but I believe the whole set was made by Ralph Tawangyaouma.Ralph Tawangyaouma (1906-1973)Ralph Tawangyaouma, Hopi Pueblo, Corn Clan, active ca. 1906-late1960s: traditional hand-wrought cast, set stone, stampwork, and silver jewelry. Ralph is the husband of Caroline Tawangyawma and first cousin of Pierce Kewanwytewa. Ralph Tawangyawma is remembered as one of the finest traditional Hopi silversmiths. His work is highly valued by serious collectors. Ralph was also a Two-Horn Priest who was deeply involved in Hopi spiritual life. He witnessed the split at Oraibi in 1906 and was among the traditional who established Hotevilla Village. He was closely associated with Yukiuma and Dan Katchongva, two former leaders at Hotevilla.

Lorraine Waatsa Zuni sterling silver turquoise cluster pendant-pin/brooch. Selling the pin shown in good condition with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa last quarter of the 20th century.Lorraine descends from a family of Zuni jewelers; the daughter of Alice and Duane Quam and grandchild of Doris and Wayne Ondelacy. Silversmith is in her blood and she was taught the craft as a youngster by her parents. Lorraine recalls making her first piece in 1971 whilst still living at home with her parents. She describes their process of making jewelry starting with shaping the stones to get them closer to the shape needed. Lorraine then grinds the stones on a 100 grit wheel without using any water. One the stone is close to the shape, she uses a sealing wax melted to a stick (size depends on the stone) and uses the stick instead of hands to perfect the size of the stone. Luwayne then finishes with the silverwork. Lorraine and Luwayne are prolific and their work is a mixture of pass-downs and newer designs. She has received recognition for her art including being published in ‘Zuni Jewelry,’ by Theda and Michael Bassman.

His father, the renowned silversmith, Roger Skeet, Sr. was one of the famed Indian trader, C.G. Wallaces primary in-house Navajo silversmiths along with such other accomplished luminaries as Austin Wilson and Ambrose Roanhorse. Skeet Sr. worked for Wallace at his landmark trading post at the Zuni Pueblo in far Western New Mexico for approximately 30 years from the late 1920s until his death in 1959.Roger Skeet, Jr. was born in 1933 and he began making silver alongside his Father in Wallaces trading post as aneight year-old boy. The silverwork of both the Skeets is quite similar, clean-lined and very traditionally-crafted but with a distinctly modern sensibility and always extremely fine detailing. Some of you may know his work under the trademark of "Two Dogs." He resides with his wife and 7 children, in Smith Lake, New Mexico, where he was born and raised. Lawrence started doing jewelry, for himself, when he was 20. He, like so many others, learned his trade by watching a family member. In this case, his older sister. Of Lawrence and his seven siblings, five of them make jewelry: himself, both of his sisters and two of his brothers. One of his brother's is in the military, one works on the railroad and the other lives in Salt Lake City. Lawrence's favorite part of jewelry is working with the silver and molding it into a thing of beauty. Watching him work is quite the privelege! The design process is the hardest part of him, but he always wins out and produces some very nice pieces. He makes concho belts, bracelets, ranger buckles, silver kachinas, kachina bolos, 3-D bracelets, storyteller bracelets and trophy buckles. TOMMY SINGER(Navajo b. 1940 – 2014)Tommy grew up in a small community of Dilcon on the Navajo reservation. Tommy Singer was a Navajo silversmith who specialized in chip-inlay jewelry. His inlaid turquoise, coral, and silver pieces incorporated traditional Navajo designs. Singer gained acclaim as the originator of the chip inlay design. Because of this innovation, Tommy is considered by many as one of the greatest contemporary Indian jewelry silversmiths of our time. Even though he was world renowned, he worked on the Navajo reservation in a small studio surrounded with his family and other tribal members.The Singer family has been involved in silversmithing, stone and beadwork for a very long time, handing the art down from one generation to another. Tommy was a silversmith for over 50 years. He learned the art of silversmithing from his father when he was just 7 years old. His Father Tsinnigine Hathali was a Navajo Medicine man. Tommy incorporates many traditional sandpainting and rug designs of the Navajo People into his jewelry. Tommy began creating jewelry full-time at the age of 21. His early works were done in the silver overlay technique. His work soon began to feature Turquoise stones.While working with scrap turquoise chips, Tommy pioneered the technique of Chip inlay used by thousands of artists to this day. For many years Tommy and his brothers created Jewelry using the Chip inlay style. Later in life, Tommy had returned to his roots by creating Exquisite Silver Overlaid Jewelry with intricate designs. His current work often includes 14 Karat Gold Overlaid on Silver. Tommy also carved storyteller scenes and silver bead necklaces with tremendous skill.When asked about his work, Singer said, "Every piece is made with the various meanings from my traditional ways - the Navajo way of living. My father was asilversmith, too. He taught me, and wanted me to continue this trade. It was my father's dream that I learn to silversmith so that I could continue his beliefs."His work is well known internationally and is featured in a number of Indian art publications. One can easily recognize Tommy’s work. He marks his finished pieces with “T. Singer” or with “T and a crescent moon”. Whether Tommy created a bolo tie, buckle, ring, necklace, pendant, or bracelet, he stated that, “All my jewelry is made to satisfy my customer. Each piece is unique and is made very different. I try hard to make different styles and designs of my jewelry.”His legacy of work will continue to live on for many years. In fact, Rosita (Rose) and the family have continued Tommy’s legacy by creating jewelry with his designs. Tommy and his wife Rose came up with a new hallmark before his death which is “T&R Singer”. Peter is married and has three daughters and two grandsons.His background studies were at The Institute of American Indian Art. His painting teacher was Onalee Loloma, jewelry he learned from Skip Holbrook, and sculpture from Alan Houser. Peter has been a jeweler working in silver and gold for 40 years.Peter has a distinctive contemporary style of his own, using geometric designs reminiscent of Navajo rug patterns. He often combines Navajo stamping with overlay and will sometimes add a stone cabochon here and there as a tasteful garnish to a piece.
