Art Deco Tiffany Exposition Sterling Tomato pattern pie server 12.25" long x 2 3/8" at widest point x 165.8 grams with no issues. tw125Charles Tiffany was born February 15, 1812 in Killingly, Connecticut. About 25 years later, in 1837, Charles Tiffany and John Young, and later in 1841, they added J.L.. Ellis as a partner, began Tiffany, Young and Ellis in Lower Manhattan. That company at the time was founded at first to sell fancy goods and stationery. Tiffany bought his parents shares of the company in 1853 and changed the focus of the company to sell upscale jewelry and merchandise. Once Tiffany bought his parent’s shares, the company was renamed to Tiffany & Co. In 1867, Tiffany & Co. was the first United States based company to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1868, the company became incorporated, had four stores and was on the right path to continue to grow to the company that it is today.A Humble Start When Young and Tiffany began their business, they originally started off with offering items such as stationery and merchandise before moving on to offering jewelry and silverware. The business continued to grow and manufacture jewelry, and later opened a location in Paris. His stores adopted the standards of European jewelry and therefore, sterling became established in the United States and the American jewelry market.Tiffany was determined to obtain one-of-a-kind jewelry. It was that desire which helped fuel how much his products were sought out, specifically among the upper classes of New York. The jewelry created by the company became partially well known because of the wealthy people who desired its products. In the 1830’s, Tiffany made it’s mark in the jewelry world at the time because they clearly marked the prices on their goods. This eliminated the chance that customers would haggle and try to negotiate the prices of the goods that they were purchasing at the time. Additionally, Tiffany’s was unique at the time because they only accepted cash payments and didn’t allow their goods to be purchased on credit.With the Civil War threatening jewelry purchasing at the time, Tiffany adjusted the focus of his company and ended up manufacturing swords, medals, light armor and many other items that were needed for war. In 1877, Tiffany & Co. had become such an established name that it easily influenced the industry and was able to make outlandish purchases. This when the now called “Tiffany diamond” (a yellow South African diamond) was purchased for $18,000 at 287 carats. The diamond was cut down to 128.54 carats over nearly a year and was eventually put on display in the Smithsonian. Today, Tiffany & Co. is an American worldwide luxury jeweler and specialty retailer, headquartered in New York City.Understanding the Markings While Tiffany & Co. is famous for the “Tiffany diamond” they are even more famous for their use of sterling silver. When looking at actually sterling silver that is made by Tiffany’s there are several markings that can help you figure out the origin and if a piece is indeed made by Tiffany’s or fake. At the start, there were several silversmiths who supplied silver flatware and holloware to Tiffany’s. Each of those silversmiths marked the pieces with their own marks in addition to marking them with Tiffany’s marks. Some of the makes of Tiffany’s sterling silver include William Gale, Gale & Hughes, Wood & Hughes, John Polhemus, Henry Hebbard, William Bogert, Grosjean & Woodward, Moore & Hebbard and John C. Moore.In 1868, Moore silversmithing firm was absorbed into Tiffany & Co. and Tiffany’s then began the production of its own silver. It was at that time that the silver was to be marked with the initial of the Artistic Director or the initial of the President of the firm but that was continued until the mid-1960’s. Arthur Bishop Jeffreys (American/Texas, 1892-1970) large Texas landscape painting. 22" x 29" canvas 28" x 35" framed. No damage or notable issues. Nice old painting from the second quarter of the 20th century. Arthur Bishop Jeffreys, 1892-1970, was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He had a mixed career as a painter and newspaper journalist. Starting late to paint in 1923, when in his early thirties, he was employed, 1942 through 1969, by one newspaper, which changed its name three times: the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tyler Courier-Times, and Courier-Times-Telegraph. He had moved to Tyler, Texas from Dallas in 1936, and for the newspaper worked primarily as a proofreader. However, using the name Arthur Bishop, he also wrote feature articles and shorter columns. As a young man, his destiny lay elsewhere, he was employed by the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company, apparently in Dallas, where he worked until 1918 as a road master's clerk, secretary to the chief engineer, and secretary to the general manager. Though he briefly studied in New York with Frederick Jarvis, Jeffreys was essentially self-taught. He died in Tyler, and is buried there.He was a member of the Art Students League, New York City; Chicago Art League, Illinois; Dallas Art Association; and Society of Independent Artists. His work is in the collections of the Hilton Hotel, Waco; and La Grange College, Georgia. His landscapes appeared in magazines including Holland's and Literary Digest in 1926. His 1927 painting of Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, autographed by the flyer, sold for $2,000 at an auction in New York City. Jeffrreys was able to make money from his similarly autographed paintings of World War I ace fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker, and Amelia Earhart, the first woman aviator to cross the Atlantic. Shows with Jeffreys work include the Exhibition of Texas Artists, Nashville Museum of Art, Tennessee (1927 prize); and Painters of Texas 1900-1950, Museums of Abilene (1989).

Austin Aqua Festival 1963,1964, 1957 Regatta Trophy. Selling all three with<br>provenance. These two Aqua fest Trophies will be the highlight of any Austin<br>Aqua Fest Collection. They are rare, one of a kind, the type of holy grail<br>collectibles that you don't even consider the existence of until you encounter<br>it. I'm including the 1957 trophy because it provides interesting provenance to<br>the two aqua fest trophies. They are all from the same estate and were won by<br>the Same man. I'm including a screenshot of his obituary. He was 40 when he won<br>the 1957 trophy, 46 for the '63, and 47 for the '64. Provenance is not something<br>usually considered with these types of collectibles, but it is interesting in<br>this case. I'm selling the lot for one price. If you're in Austin which the<br>future owner most likely will be, I've met locally to sell earlier skipper pins<br>and other rare Austin Memorabilia.<br><br>The Austin Aqua Festival was created in 1962 to promote Austin and the Texas<br>Highland Lakes as a top vacation area and to boost the local economy in what was<br>normally a slow period. The first Aqua Fest occurred Aug. 3-12, 1962. Art<br>Linkletter was the headliner for the event.<br><br>The festival offered many water related events such as a<br>150-mile canoe race, fishing contests, a sailingregatta and an illuminated night<br>time parade on the lake. There were many land based events also including the<br>Miss Austin Aqua Beauty contest, a twilight land parade, a<br>daytime military parade,<br>a rodeo, golf tournament, concerts, dances and fireworks.<br><br>Patrons of the fest could purchase a book of discount tickets to get into the<br>various venues. The tickets were called Skipper Script. The next year, the<br>script gave way to the Skipper Pin, which was purchased and pinned on the goers<br>clothing, letting the workers know that the wearer was eligible for discounts on<br>tickets.<br><br>The central location for many of the events was "Festival Beach," a small park<br>on Town Lake between the city-owned power plant and a residential neighborhood.<br>The city had originally created Town Lake as a cooling pond for the power plant.<br><br>In 1964, the festival added one of its most popular and controversial<br>events, drag boat racing on Town Lake. It also added a water<br>skiing championship, kite flying championship and an Austin Grand Prix - sports<br>car racing on city streets.<br><br>The 1966 Aqua Fest started out with the world premiere of Batman, with Adam<br>West and other actors from the movie in attendance. 1966 also saw the start of<br>the "Battle of the Bands", in which unknown rock and roll bands were judged for<br>awards and recognition. Battle of the Bands would become the festival's top<br>draw. The United States Air Force air demonstration squadron,<br>the Thunderbirds first performed at the Fest the same year.<br><br>By 1968, an estimated crowd of 150,000 watched the night lighted water parade,<br>which had been renamed to Rio Noche parade in 1964. The crowds were starting to<br>overwhelm Festival Beach causing traffic congestion, parking problems and<br>security concerns for the residents plus the noise of the events, especially the<br>drag boats. However, the mostly Hispanic community had very little political<br>clout to get anything changed.<br><br>Theme nightsEdit<br><br>Theme nights began in 1969. Various nights of the festival would highlight<br>different cultures of Texas. This first year there was<br>Western, German, Czech and Jazz and Rhythm and Blues nights. Throughout the<br>years the theme nights varied as new ones were tried and unpopular ones not<br>repeated. These included Mexican, Black Heritage, Italian, American and<br>International nights. Toward the end of the festival's life, the theme nights<br>had settled to multiple nights with Western and Mexican themes.<br><br>Aero-FestEdit<br><br>Also in 1969, Bergstrom Air Force Base, on the southeast edge of Austin, began<br>an open house in conjunction with Aqua Fest and titled it Aero-Fest. In addition<br>to the Thunderbirds performing, the gathering showed off many<br>military airplanes and other hardware. A crowd favorite was a C-5 Galaxy, which<br>visitors would walk through to get to the main display area. Aero-Fest was an<br>instant success and in just two years it was drawing 80,000 people to the base.<br>Aero-Fest ceased when the base closed in 1993.<br><br>1970–1979Edit<br><br>The new decade saw Aqua Fest's continued growth with the addition of more new<br>events such as a photography contest and motocross in 1971 and the Pet Parade in<br>1972. But the growth of the event brought confrontation with the neighborhoods<br>surrounding Festival Beach. Complaints had gone unheeded and people finally took<br>to the streets in protest. The anti-Fest coalition was led by Paul Hernandez and<br>a group calling itself the "Brown Berets." Protesters were arrested and they in<br>turn sued the City of Austin and Aqua Fest. By the end of the decade, the drag<br>boat races were gone from Town Lake and pressure was on to find a new location<br>to hold other Aqua Fest events.<br><br>1980–1989Edit<br><br>Due to continued protest and growing crowds, Aqua Fest was moved from Festival<br>Beach to Auditorium Shores, a larger park along Town Lake about a mile to the<br>west of Festival Beach. This larger area meant the festival could now have<br>multiple stages for entertainment. The festival organizers signed up corporate<br>sponsors and local radio stations to co-sponsor the entertainment and began<br>booking national acts.<br><br>The City of Austin, which had subsidized Aqua Fest in its early years, now<br>believed the Fest was self-sufficient and withdrew its financial support. The<br>city began charging the festival for use of Auditorium Shores.<br><br>In 1985, attendance at Aqua Fest peaked at 252,000. More criticism came at the<br>festival for lack of parking, excessive noise and alcohol abuse issues. This<br>time the rebuke was from residents of the Bouldin Creek neighborhood just south<br>of Auditorium Shores. The opponents of the festival were able to force a<br>non-binding referendum to move Aqua Fest to Lake Walter E. Long in far east<br>Austin. The measure passed but promised corporate support to build a new<br>facility went away as Texas entered an oil bust in the middle of the decade.<br>Aqua Fest stayed at Auditorium Shores.<br><br>1990–1998Edit<br><br>With its multiple stages for entertainment, Aqua Fest changed from a civic event<br>to a live music event. The organizers began to book bigger and bigger acts, even<br>paying premiums to get popular acts such as Dolly Parton in 1992. This drove<br>ticket prices up and attendance down. By 1993, the festival only drew 44,000<br>people and as a result lost $722,000. The festival organization exhausted its<br>cash reserves and asked its largest creditor, the City of Austin, for permission<br>to pay off its debt in annual installments.<br><br>In 1994, Aqua Fest returned to its roots with more local acts and an all<br>volunteer staff and in 1995 brought back the popular theme nights. They also<br>tried drag boat races again, this time at Lake Walter E. Long, but the races<br>drew little interest. It was all too little, too late and the Austin Aqua<br>Festival folded in 1998.

Austrian Cold Painted Bronze 3 Cats at Bowl. 2.5" wide x 1" tall, great piece from the first half of the 20th century with no damage and minimal wear to paint. I've seen this mold before with the Bergman mark, this one just has Austria mark so I'm not sure but it's his style and nice quality. Franz Bergman was an Austrian entrepreneur best known for his Viennese foundry which produced many patina- and cold-painted bronze sculptures of figures, animals, Orientalist scenes, and mythological creatures. Bergman is often misidentified as a sculptor, but he himself was not the original artist for the works—rather, he hired many anonymous sculptors to execute his ideas. He signed many of the works produced by his foundry with the pseudonym Nam Greb, so as to conceal his name from the authorities and avoid penalties for immorality. Jack Adakai was a renowned Navajo silversmith in the later half of his life - he took up his craft after fighting in the European-African Campaign during WWII. He was born in the 1920s and lived until the mid 1980s. He was well known for his traditional designs and high quality craftsmanship. Working during the mid 20th century, his pieces range from early motifs to modernist expressions. He generally employed the use of high quality turquoise and hand worked elements. He is the father in law of John Hornbeck. When he returned home from the Army he worked the rails roads, drove trucks and also began refining his silversmithing skills. He became well known for his old school traditional style silver and heavy gauge jewelry.
