15th/16th century Vellum Antiphonal leaf. This is on Vellum/hide. There are sometears but it's stable in the frame. For some weird reason there is clear tape on the back of the glass and a little on the front, possibly they taped the two panes together and over time the tape degraded a little, still it displays well. Slightly illuminated in the picture shown. 22.5" x 16" framed.The origins of liturgical music traditionally date back to St. Gregory the Great (d. 604), who was inspired by the Holy Dove to record the principles of 'Gregorian' chant. The Gradual contained the musical parts of the Missal and was sung from the steps (gradus) of the altar. The Antiphoner contained the musical sections of the Breviary. These terms have become interchangeable in modern times. Because of their size and complexity, these manuscripts were still being handmade in the traditional way for centuries after the introduction of printing. They were boldly hand-written and illuminated on large sheets of sturdy vellum so that the entire choir could read from one book.

16" c1900 Wilhelm Schiller Austrian Majolica Vase 11.75" wide with handles. X 157/8" tall. No cracks, chips, or restorations.Wilhelm Schiller began production of porcelain and earthenware in Bodenbach, Bohemia in 1829, operating under the name of Schiller and Gerbing. In 1885, the firm was dissolved and renamed Wilhelm Schiller and Son and remained in operation until the onset of World War I. It is unknown whether the firm of Schiller and Gerbing produced majolica, but the firm of Wilhelm Schiller and Son is clearly the most prolific of the Bohemian manufacturers of majolica.The color palette used by Bohemian majolica makers including Schiller is much more subdued than that of their Staffordshire counterparts. The background of many Schiller pieces is of a matte-finished taupe, light gray or turquoise with glazed surface features in various shades of brown and black. The interiors are usually glazed in turquoise. Much of the firm’s production reflects the transition from traditional Victorian majolica to the Art Deco style. The most common Schiller pieces are decorative vases, jardinieres, table centers and ewers. No examples of Schiller majolica plates, bowls or other functional table-wares are known.Wilhelm Schiller and Sons majolica was marked with the letters ‘WS&S’ that was either impressed or contained within a raised cartouche.

16" Los Castillo Modernist sterling and turquoise choker necklace. 16" long 14mm<br>wide, no issues, likely simulated or block turquoise 53 grams, rare design.<br><br>Los Castillo Jewelry - History<br>Antonio Castillo and his brothers Jorge, Miguel, and Justo began Los Castillo in<br>1939. They had all apprenticed in William Spratling’s taller before starting<br>their own business in Taxco, Mexico. Antonio Castillo rose to the level of<br>master silversmith during his time working with Spratling.<br><br>The Los Castillo workshop trained and employed many skilled silversmiths over<br>its decades in the business, including the Castillo brothers’ cousin Salvador<br>Teran, Sigi Pineda, Antonio Pineda, and Antonio Castillo’s wife, Margot van<br>Voorhies Carr. All these artists went on to open their own successful workshops,<br>including van Voorhies Carr who founded Margot de Taxco after she and Antonio<br>Castillo divorced.<br><br>Los Castillo is known for its quality silver wares as well as mixed metals that<br>incorporated copper and/or brass with sterling silver. Other decorative home<br>accessories can be found with silver plating and inlaid stone embellishments.<br><br>Chato (Jorge) Castillo was one of the Castillo brothers who worked in the 1930s<br>for William Spratling. 16" Margot De Taxco Mid Century Modernist sterling Pendant on cuban link necklace. Necklace is nice and thick 4mm with no apparent markings, tested sterling. The ends of the clasp will not go through the bail of the pendant, so I assume they have been together "forever".. Pendant 2.25" with bail x 1 3/8". 42.9 grams.Margot Van Voorhies was born in 1896 in San Francisco, California. By the time<br>she left her native country for good, she had survived the death of her father<br>in 1903, the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906, the loss of her mother at the<br>hands of a er in 1931 and the end of her first marriage in 1936.<br><br>Fortunately, a Mexican vacation changed the life of Margot Van Voorhies in ways<br>she could never have imagined. In 1937, forty-one-year-old divorcée Margot Van<br>Voorhies left San Francisco on a trip to Mexico City. Fate threw her into the<br>path of Don Antonio Castillo, who took her to Taxco, a Mexican hotbed for the<br>design, crafting, and production of silver objects, in particular jewelry and<br>housewares.<br><br>Soon, Castillo would become Margot’s second husband. At the time, Castillo was<br>working for William Spratling, a pioneer in Mexican silversmithing. He brought<br>Margot into the business as a designer, helping her to transform her paper<br>creations into three-dimensional forms in silver. In 1939, the pair, along with<br>other members of Castillo’s family, opened shop as Los Castillo Taller [Taller<br>is Spanish for “Workshop”], with Margot as the top designer.<br><br>After ten years, the marriage between Castillo and Van Voorhies dissolved, as<br>did their professional association. Margot went on to open her own shop in 1948,<br>taking the name Margot de Taxco, by which she is best known today. Seven years<br>later, enamel was added to many of her pieces, and this is where Margot found<br>her legacy.<br><br>At the peak of her career, Margot, who designed each piece herself, had two<br>dozen silversmiths and a dozen enamellists in her employ to execute her vision.<br>The men performed the duties as silversmiths; the women did the enamel work,<br>using tiny brushes to bring the watercolor drawings to life. To ensure the<br>accurate rendering of her jewelry designs, she compiled a book of instructions<br>and drawings, detailing the construction and finishing of each. Margot attracted<br>talented craftsmen who later went on to cement their own reputations, such as<br>Sigi Pineda, Miguel Melendez, and Melecio Rodriguez.<br><br>Many contemporary Hollywood celebrities were clients of Margot, including John<br>Wayne and Lana Turner, who visited her shop every year.<br><br>Tragedy struck in the form of a fire in 1960. Forced to move her studio, she<br>never again regained her prior success, and the business folded in 1974. Margot<br>granted several of the silversmiths in her employ permission to use her molds to<br>create pieces on their own, in return for debt forgiveness. As a result, many of<br>Margot’s pieces were re-created by silversmiths such as Jaimie Quiroz and<br>Geronimo Fuentes, bearing their hallmark rather than hers.<br><br>Margot passed away in 1985. But her talent as a designer and her influence as an<br>artist have continued to gain recognition since the time of her death.<br><br>Margot’s shop produced some repousse silver (a technique where a raised or<br>relief design is hammered in from the reverse side of the piece). But she is<br>best known for her champlevé enamel work. Champlevé is created by carving,<br>etching, striking, or casting troughs or cells into the surface of a piece and<br>filling it with vitreous enamel. In Margot’s jewelry, the designs were<br>die-struck, a process that was detailed and critical to the final product.<br><br>Margot produced many suites that included necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and<br>earrings, as well as convertible jewelry. Margot de Taxco jewelry is recognized<br>for its elegance, femininity, and variety.<br><br>There were many areas of influence that can be found in Margot’s work. Her fish<br>and wave motifs celebrated her love of Japanese art. The ornate swirls and<br>floral motifs were reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style. Mischievous<br>pre-Columbian figures were a recurring theme. Art Deco style ballerinas struck<br>graceful poses. 16" Salvador Terán mid century modernist sterling choker necklace ranges from 7mm-25mm wide, 66.4 grams. No issues.Salvador Vaca Terán (1920 – 1974) Known primarily as a Mexican modernist, Salvador Terán was born in Taxco and was a cousin of the Castillo family. He began work for William Spratling (“The Father of Mexican Silver”) at Las Delicias in the 1930s.He is considered an exceptional designer, innovator, and silversmithing technician whose specialties include mosaics and jewelry. In 1939, he left Las Delicias to become a founding member of Los Castillos, the renowned Taxco workshop that produced exquisite mixed-metal works. He stayed at Los Castillos, creating jewelry sold under their mark, until 1952. He then moved to Mexico City to open his own shop, La India Bonita that ultimately employed twenty-five silversmiths.Terán is well known for trays, wall hangings, coffee sets, and boxes that are usually brass with brightly colored glass. His jewelry creations often make use of overlapping planes set against oxidized backgrounds.He also uses pierced forms with shadowboxed backgrounds that make some of his pieces look surreal. Although his designs are often sleek and modern for the time in which he created them, Salvador was also greatly influenced by pre Columbian art. Terán pieces also combine metal with stone mosaics to create trays and pitchers.A fine example of Terán’s jewelry design is a raw emerald necklace that is about 75 inches wide at the widest point and to measure for length, but only about 16 inches long when worn. It lays flat since it is wired from link to link giving it fluidity of motion.All of Salvador’s work in jewelry and other disciplines is highly collectible, quite rare, and rarely surfaces on the vintage jewelry market.

16.5" Polia Pillin(1909-1992) Mid century Modern California Art Pottery Bowl<br>late 1940's-50's. Exceptional early heavily potted Pillin piece just discovered<br>estate fresh. Bought from Polia for $75, I'm thinking the 101 on the tag<br>indicates it was likely her 101st piece made. This is a really big bowl with<br>typical crazing and 3 of the tiniest glaze flakes on the outside rim. No cracks,<br>chips, or restorations.<br><br>Polish-born Polia Pillin (1909-1992) and her husband William established their<br>ceramic studio, The Pillin Art Pottery Company, in their Los Angeles, CA garage<br>in 1948. Her husband shaped and glazed the pots that became canvases that Polia<br>used to paint fanciful scenes of people and animals in the mid-century style.<br>Thousands of pieces were produced and Polia became one of the most highly<br>regarded of contemporary studio potters today.<br><br>The clay used for Pillin pottery was typically red-brick in color. William<br>experimented with different glazes and produced some pieces without Polia’s<br>artwork. However, it was Polia’s artistic designs that garnered her<br>international recognition. Polia was inspired by the Cubism movement and by the<br>works of Pablo Picasso whom she greatly admired. Her style is often referred to<br>as “Byzantine”. Polia’s favorite subjects were women, horses, birds, fish and<br>other animals painted over colorfully rich glazes. The overall pallet had an<br>organic, jewel-toned quality.<br><br>Each piece of Pillin pottery was hand-thrown, glazed, painted and hence, unique.<br>Because Pillin worked from her garage (and in her kitchen when she lived in<br>Chicago), she did not have access to expert tradesmen, chemists or specialized<br>equipment that could mass produce her work. For that reason, most Pillin pottery<br>is highly crazed. Rare pieces with little to no crazing command higher values.<br><br>Most pieces of Pillin pottery were produced beginning in 1948 and marked on the<br>bottom with Polia’s signature “Pillin” in either thick or thin black ink. Rare<br>pieces produced in her Chicago kitchen in 1946 and 1947 are incised “46” or<br>“47”. Some very early pieces are marked “W+P” above the Pillin signature to<br>indicate William throwing the pieces and Polia decorating them. Thicker thrown<br>pieces tend to indicate earlier works.

1709 French Land Grant Texas? The acrylic case measures 17" tall x 20" wide. Ihaven't had a chance to figure out what territory is being discussed here as I don't speak French. I did acquire it with some early Texas documents/land grants with presidential signatures but none quite this old. I feel like this is likely a really important document and would be grateful for any type of info regarding the territory discussed here or anything else.

Contains The Old Batchelor, The Double Dealer, Love for Love, The Mourning Bride, The Way of the World, The Judgment of Paris, Semele, and Poems on Several Occasions. Published one year after the author's death. This collected edition first appeared in 1710, when the Preface stated that its publication had been hastened because "these five Plays have lately undergone a spurious Impression, and have been very faultily, as well as very indirectly Published, in Prejudice both to the Author and to the Bookseller who has the Property of the Copy. In the Third Volume there is an Opera [Semele], which has never yet appear'd; of which there is little to be said in this place, but that that the Musick is excellently compos'd by Mr. John Eccles." Semele was never performed until 1743, when Handel composed the score which is still performed. 190 year old book with wear to covers as shown, some foxing throughout, I believe all the pages are intact and the bindings are strong. 6 5/8" x 4".tw201

The handle may be slightly weighted, but most of the weight is in the thick blade with fantastic hand engraving.
