1972 Press Club of Dallas "Katie Award" Best Spot Newspaper Coverage Sam Kinch<br>Jr Dallas Morning News Modernist Sculpture 15" tall and very heavy, solid bronze<br>on a wood base.<br><br>Sam Kinch Jr., was the founding editor of Texas Weekly and a former political<br>and government correspondent for The Dallas Morning News.<br><br>Kinch started Texas Weekly in 1984 with two friends, George Phenix and John<br>Rogers. He sold his share in 1998 (the political newsletter is now part of The<br>Texas Tribune) and retired to write, travel and enjoy his family.<br><br>He was a terrific reporter and mentor to other journalists, irreverent, smart as<br>hell, a great lover of dirty jokes, full of history, an incurable reader, a<br>Presbyterian elder and a surprisingly soft touch for people who needed some<br>help.<br><br>He wrote books, including Texas Under a Cloud, with Ben Proctor, about the<br>Sharpstown stock scandal that rocked the Capitol and resulted in the biggest<br>turnover in legislators in modern history, and Too Much is Not Enough, with Anne<br>Marie Kilday, a book on campaign finance in Texas.<br><br>Kinch was a University of Texas grad, with bachelor's and master's degrees in<br>journalism, a former editor of The Daily Texan.<br><br>The Press Club of Dallas originated in the late 1940s, when<br>employees of the Dallas Morning News and the Dallas TimesHerald gathered to<br>socialize after work. The organization was<br>formally founded in 1948 and chartered by the State of Texas in<br>1951. Its members were some of the first responders on the scene<br>when President Kennedy was assassinated, and the new reporting<br>standards established nationwide afterward bolstered the club’s<br>appeal to professionals. The Press Club of Dallas moved locations<br>frequently over the years, residing most recently at the Women’s<br>Museum in Fair Park. The organization currently maintains a board<br>of directors but has no physical location.1<br>The organization’s most notable activities are its annual<br>Gridiron show, Katie Awards, and roasts. The Gridiron show<br>began in 1951 and was modelled on the national one staged in<br>Washington, D.C. Originally consisting of “biting satire,” the<br>performance shifted towards a Broadway-esque style during the<br>late 1970s, but continued to lampoon events in Dallas. The<br>Griddle, a satirical newspaper, was produced and sold at the shows<br>to generate additional revenue. The Katie Awards ceremony began<br>in 1958. It honored “excellence in journalism” and attracted large<br>numbers of members of the press due to the prestige associated<br>with winning one. The Press Club of Dallas also annually roasted<br>prominent local citizens. These events serve as fundraisers for<br>journalism scholarships offered by the organization.2

This phenomenal owl sculpture was done by renowned art pottery, Van Briggle, in Colorado.   He stands about 9-1/2 inches tall, and was created in the very last part of the 80's, or very beginning of the 1990's, with a high probability of being made in 1989.   Dusty Rose was just starting to be used as a glaze, and very very few of these owls were made with this color glaze. There were a few rouge glazers who experimented with it before it became a mainstream glaze for Van Briggle, and this lucky guy was one of the few, and earliest pieces to use it!  He is clearly marked on the bottom:  His finisher was Clara Beyers, and his glazer was Helen Johnson, signified by the CB and the V incised in the base.  He is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or crazing.  The color, dusty rose tinged with smoky blue, in my opinion, is what really makes this sculpture special...it's completely haunting and ethereal, and lends something to the whole attitude of the owl. If you love art pottery, you will want to add this spectacular piece to your collection!

They measure 7 7/8" tall and the bases are 3 11/16" wide. I'm 100% certain these<br>are very early antique figures circa late 18th to early 19th century. They have<br>Joseph Gaspard Roberts' mark and I have no reason to believe they aren't that.<br>He operated a factory until 1793. The man has an extremely old restoration to<br>his arm and a small chip under the base with no other damage. The woman has a<br>few small chips off her bouquet with no other damage.

Miguel Martinez Rancho Alegre Sterling silver turquoise Chile pin 2.5" wide x 1.25" tall x 14 grams with no issues. Martinez started his career designing for Emma Melendez in Taxco in the early 1950s before becoming the head designer at Rancho Alegre in the mid 1950s to the late 1960s, and he has continued to design great things ever since. He is a designer not a silversmith, so his pieces can have marks from several different workshops. Often, not always, his pieces are also marked "Miguel", but many of his pieces from the 1950s from Rancho Alegre don't have the extra designer mark. However, his pieces are readily recognizable by the strength of the design!

Great piece with no issues. The paint is a bisque type rather than the more common shiny painting of the era. It was painted at the factory pre firing as it survived much cleaning on my part. Time is approximately 7.5" x 10.25".<br>Very unusual piece from a well listed artist.<br><br>BIOGRAPHY: Harris Strong was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1920.  His aunt<br>owned a greeting card company, and that influenced him to become an artist.  He<br>also had a strong scientific bent, so he was meticulous about the "engineering"<br>of his tiles, which featured many innovations when competitors were creating<br>"pie plates," in his own dismissive works. <br><br>During the war, he was a cryptographer, working directly under General Douglas<br>MacArthur during World War II.  Afterward, he studied ceramics* and the<br>chemistry of ceramic glazes at North Carolina State University.  Then he worked<br>in Brooklyn, New York at Kelby Pottery.  <br><br>Later his own business really took off. He had showrooms in Chicago, New York<br>and Tokyo… he created a 30' long free-standing ceramic tile mural for the<br>Waldorf-Astoria in York City, which remains in place.  One friend says he was<br>the first to ever show art at a home furnishings show. <br><br>He loved, and sang Gilbert & Sullivan, collected stamps, and played bridge.  In<br>1970, Strong relocated to Trenton, Maine, but after a fire destroyed his glazes<br>developed over 20 years, he shifted his focus to prints, serigraphs*, woodcuts*,<br>etchings*, engravings*, collage* and paintings. <br><br>Strong died in 2006.

Pre-Columbian Aztec Jaguar Warrior figures and head shard. Selling both out of<br>an important collection of world artifacts all purchased through major auction<br>houses/reputable galleries. The receipts I did find showed price was no object.<br>I feel really fortunate to be able own these items even if just for a short time<br>and to be able to offer them at a fraction of what they last sold for. The<br>collector collected for himself and was low key as are his heirs, so as much as<br>I would love to acquire more provenance on each item it's just not possible at<br>this point without being intrusive, then possibly still not possible.<br><br>The head shard is great and all, measures 4.75" wide x 4.25" tall with loss<br>shown, likely broken at the neck and part of a large figure. This Jaguar warrior<br>is absolutely amazing, polychrome decorated, has an amazing "no brainer" to me<br>patina overall. Very realistic figure made by a skilled potter at the time. 6"<br>tall with old restorations to clean break at head, base of sword, and one leg.<br>Even though this is not incredibly large it is incredibly nice and my guess is<br>the previous owner paid thousands of dollars for this figure. Well here it is! What you've always wanted but couldn't justify doing<br>financially or with a clear conscience. Someone did it for you about 50 years<br>ago. They did a good job it appears. Though I guess they had to drill the<br>pitcher. The pitcher is perfect otherwise with no cracks, chips, or<br>restorations. The bowl has a very tight crowsfoot on the base that doesn't go<br>through to interior. Both pieces have the expected crazing from 120 year old<br>earthenware. A couple worn glaze spots on rim of bowl, no chips or cracks. The<br>bowl is 15.75" wide, pitcher is 11.5" tall without brass hardware. Lamp and<br>switch work.<br><br>I'll include the shade if you want, but my main concern will be the careful<br>packaging of the bowl/pitcher. They will for sure reach you in the condition<br>they're currently in.

Plastic was<br>used for flat windscreens and occasionally metal was formed and used for details<br>like cycle-type fenders. Most are in a scale of 1/100 though, incredibly, some<br>are even smaller.

The woman is 8 7/8" tall, the man is 8.5" tall. Tag on the base indicating they<br>were part of the "Burnap Collection" Chelsea, 1770. I believe they're from the<br>crossover period right around the time the firm changed hands in 1769. They have<br>the Patch marks on the base. I believe these are a fairly uncommon subject<br>matter. Guaranteed 18th century.<br><br>There is much damage to the applied Florals on both pieces. I believe there is a<br>very old professional restoration to his hat and her arm.<br><br>The pair is very heavy, 3.25 pounds.<br><br>The Chelsea porcelain manufactory (established around 1743-45) is the first<br>important porcelainmanufactory in England;[1] its earliest soft-paste porcelain,<br>aimed at the aristocratic market—cream jugs in the form of two seated goats—are<br>dated 1745. The entrepreneurial director was Nicholas Sprimont, a silversmith by<br>trade, but few documents survive to aid a picture of the manufactory's history.<br>Early tablewares, being produced in profusion by 1750, depend on Meissen<br>porcelain models and on silver prototypes, such as salt cellars in the form of<br>realistic shells.<br><br>Chelsea was known for its figures. From about 1760 its inspiration was drawn<br>more from Sèvres porcelainthan Meissen.<br><br>In 1769 the manufactory was purchased by William Duesbury, owner of the Derby<br>porcelain factory, and the wares are indistinguishable during the "Chelsea-Derby<br>period" that lasted until 1784, when the Chelsea factory was demolished and its<br>moulds, patterns and many of its workmen and artists transferred to Derby.

Art Deco Russian 875 Silver Ladies Watch Band. Great watch band from the 20's or<br>30's. Adjustable with center springs from 6"-6.5" approximately 10mm wide. So it<br>just so happend I had a white gold watch laying here so I had the opportunity to<br>figure out how easy this thing is to use. Each side has a clasp mechanism that<br>is easier to undo and do than the average bracelet but is totally secure. So any<br>old watch with 10mm or larger lugs on the sides, this should snap right on<br>easily and it is easy to snap right off so even if it's tight you can use either<br>end like a clasp. The soles appear to have never touched the ground. There's a tag on then that<br>says 3 1/2D and has a price of 1.93 or 7.93, can't tell for sure. The laces are<br>a little frail, but the leather on the boots is soft like early kid glove<br>leather. There is some wear to the purple silk lining. They're pretty small<br>measuring 9.5" long from pointy top to very back of heel, and 2.75" wide at the<br>widest point.
