sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin 15th/16th century vellum antiphonal leaf 2

    1 in stock

15th/16th century Vellum Antiphonal leaf. This is on Vellum/hide. There are some tears but it's stable in the frame. For some weird reason there is clear tape on the back of the glass and a little on the front, possibly they taped the two panes together and over time the tape degraded a little, still it displays well. Slightly illuminated in the picture shown. 22.5" x 16" framed. The origins of liturgical music traditionally date back to St. Gregory the Great (d. 604), who was inspired by the Holy Dove to record the principles of 'Gregorian' chant. The Gradual contained the musical parts of the Missal and was sung from the steps (gradus) of the altar. The Antiphoner contained the musical sections of the Breviary. These terms have become interchangeable in modern times. Because of their size and complexity, these manuscripts were still being handmade in the traditional way for centuries after the introduction of printing. They were boldly hand-written and illuminated on large sheets of sturdy vellum so that the entire choir could read from one book.

1960's Apollo Signed Charles Schultz Snoopy Astronaut poster. Charles Schulz was
a huge fan of the American Space Program and Snoopy was a NASA mascot for the
space program and was seen on uniform patches at NASA. Guaranteed 100% sure on
my life 100% authentic. By inheritance it's from the estate listed below, Debbie
is Rep Jerry L. Pettis' daughter Deborah mentioned below. Measures 22" x 16", I
have some other related items from the same estate that do help with the
provenance but I'm offering them separately as they are difficult to photograph
together and I cannot guess whether the potential buyer would be interested
enough in the other items. Some would, some won't. Plus I have to find said
items. Minor wear but overall clean with no significant issues. There were
apollo 8 and 11 items in this estate including signed presidential and signed
astronaut items. I'm actually not 100% sure which Apollo mission this poster is
from because evidently it's an extremely uncommon poster. It seems there was a
snoopy poster for every mission but you won't find them signed by Charles
Schultz, the highest result I found was an Apollo 1 poster the same size sold
for $3500 in 2018, unsigned.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Feb. 14 (AP)—Representative Jerry L. All things are alive and composed of
two parts–it is the joining of these two parts which make the whole and thus
create balance and harmony.” Dan brings this notion of balance and tradition to
the meticulous silver of his jewelry.

Dan learned silversmithing from his father, John Nez Begay, who made jewelry for
over 80 years, and lived to be 106 years old. His mother, Bernice Charlie, was a
weaver and is the source of Dan’s inspirations. He tells of his mother visiting
him in a dream, where she stirred him to create his now famous triple overlay
rug design jewelry.

Dan’s formal education is in engineering. He worked for the Bureau of Indian
Affairs for 20 years. After being injured in 1985, Dan needed another way to
support his family (4 daughters). Being an accomplished silversmith, it only
made sense to him to devote his time to making jewelry.

Dan consistently collects awards and accolades at juried art shows, such as
Santa Fe Indian Market. He has won numerous awards and ribbons at Gallup
Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, Window Rock, Arizona Tribal Fair, the New Mexico and
Arizona State Fair and the Shiprock, NM Fair.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what
it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings
photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if
the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is
shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Rebecca Collins Cast Oxidized sterling silver angel pin 29.8 grams 2" from toe to wing, the world renowned Dallas Texas artist that created this is now retired and no longer creating jewelry. Rebecca Collins, internationally known jewelry designer, is a native Texan and Phi Beta Kappa SMU graduate who started out as high school teacher. In 1975, Rebecca took a silversmithing class, where she discovered her passion for creating wearable works of art. Before she designed jewelry, she was an artist, and her paintings are now highly collectible. Rebecca Collins travels the world in search of materials for her jewelry, buying gemstones and antiquities from thousands of sources. Rebecca's designs are each singular and unique: as in nature, no two items are ever exactly alike. When she started designing jewelry, she discovered her fascination with connections between unrelated objects, which lies at the heart of her distinctive designs. Fans admire her artistic combination of contrasting materials such as faceted aquamarine with fossils, jade with vegetable "Off White", or two-thousand year old Roman glass....... her "quirky" combinations create her signature look. Her favorite artists for inspiration are Gustav Klimt and Henri Matisse. anderas

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Antique Chinese Bronze Archaistic Mirror

    1 in stock

Antique Chinese Bronze Archaistic Mirror. 3.75" wide, solid bronze, from a very
nice collection of Chinese Antiques. Appears Excavated, collected in the third
quarter of the 20th century. I'm unsure of exact age.

The Chinese magic mirror (simplified Chinese: 透光镜; traditional Chinese: 透光鏡;
pinyin: tòu guāng jìng) traces back to at least the 5th century, although their
existence during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 24 AD) has been claimed. The mirrors
were made out of solid bronze. The front was polished and could be used as a
mirror, while the back has a design cast in the bronze, or other decoration.
When sunlight or other bright light shines onto the mirror, the mirror appears
to become transparent. If that light is reflected from the mirror onto a wall,
the pattern on the back of the mirror is then projected onto the wall.

The back of the same mirror
Bronze mirrors were the standard in many Eurasian cultures, for example ancient
Rome, but most lacked this characteristic, as did most Chinese bronze mirrors.

Robert Temple describes their construction: "The basic mirror shape, with the
design on the back, was cast flat, and the convexity of the surface produced
afterwards by elaborate scraping and scratching. The surface was then polished
to become shiny. The stresses set up by these processes caused the thinner parts
of the surface to bulge outwards and become more convex than the thicker
portions. Finally, a mercury amalgam was laid over the surface; this created
further stresses and preferential buckling. The result was that imperfections of
the mirror surface matched the patterns on the back, although they were too
minute to be seen by the eye. But when the mirror reflected bright sunlight
against a wall, with the resultant magnification of the whole image, the effect
was to reproduce the patterns as if they were passing through the solid bronze
by way of light beams."

History
China
In about 800 AD, during the Tang dynasty (618–907), a book entitled Record of
Ancient Mirrors described the method of crafting solid bronze mirrors with
decorations, written characters, or patterns on the reverse side that could cast
these in a reflection on a nearby surface as light struck the front, polished
side of the mirror; due to this seemingly transparent effect, they were called
"light-penetration mirrors" by the Chinese.

This Tang era book was lost over the centuries, but magic mirrors were described
in the Dream Pool Essays by Shen Kuo (1031–1095), who owned three of them as a
family heirloom. Perplexed as to how solid metal could be transparent, Shen
guessed that some sort of quenching technique was used to produce tiny wrinkles
on the face of the mirror too small to be observed by the eye. Although his
explanation of different cooling rates was incorrect, he was right to suggest
the surface contained minute variations which the eye could not detect; these
mirrors also had no transparent quality at all, as discovered by the British
scientist William Bragg in 1932 (after an entire century of their confounding
Western scientists). Bragg noted that "Only the magnifying effect of reflection
makes them [the designs] plain".

Japan
As the manufacture of mirrors in China increased, it expanded to Korea and
Japan. In fact, Emperor Cao Rui and the Wei Kingdom of China gave numerous
bronze mirrors (known as Shinju-kyo in Japan) to Queen Himiko of Wa (Japan),
where they were received as rare and mysterious objects. They were described as
"sources of honesty" as they were said to reflect all good and evil without
error. That is why Japan considers a sacred mirror called Yata-no-Kagami to be
one of the three great imperial treasures.

Today, Yamamoto Akihisa is said to be the last manufacturer of magic mirrors in
Japan. The Kyoto Journal [6] interviewed the craftsman and he explained a small
portion of the technique, that he learned from his father.

Marian is the wife of Navajo Silversmith, Leonard Nez.“The love of being a silversmith started long before I knew to design jewelry. I had watched my parents work on their jewelry and decided to solder some pieces for them when they made a trip to town. Little did I know that this was to be the beginning of my love of jewelry making. I will always give thanks and forever be grateful to my parents for introducing me to the craft and handing down this amazing skill to me.Starting in the late 1970’s I worked in various jewelry shops through Albuquerque, New Mexico, doing mass production work and designing individual pieces. During my work with Zachary Jewelry Company, they promoted my creativity and entered some individual pieces of my jewelry in art shows. My designs were awarded first and second place ribbons. In addition, a photo of me working on my jewelry was published in the book, “Allure of Turquoise Book” written by Joe Dan Lowry. In early 2000’s my husband Leonard Nez (whom I taught the craft to) and I started our own jewelry business. After my father passed from complication of diabetes, I decided to explore the health field to understand and educate myself about diabetes and help others. I enrolled in Community Colleges where I accomplished my goal of becoming a Certified Community Health Worker, specializing in diabetes prevention with Native people. My passion for my jewelry still lingered, so I worked part-time on my jewelry. I did not want to lose the unique craftsmanship and design work I so loved. The designs that I now create represent a tribute to my parents, who I am, and where I come from. Each piece that is created comes from the humble heart and positive thoughts. I want the person wearing my jewelry to know and feel the love that’s behind my work.”-Marian NezAll precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) Big Bend Texas/Mexico Landscape South of El Paso.100% guaranteed Original Oil on canvas painted by Porfirio Salinas in the 1960's
with no damage or restorations of any kind. Overall: 32 3/4 by 38 3/4 inches
24" x 30" painting. Salinas is not as well known for his west Texas/Northern
Mexico desert landscaped but he did do some. I'm sure it was more pleasant
sitting in a bluebonnet field close to home in the spring then it was sweating
in the desert, but a trained eye should be able to see this master's skill and
respect his diversity.

On Oct 18, 2008 a much smaller Porfirio Salinas landscape with a similar terrain
was offered for auction by David Dike Fine Art at a $15,000 starting price, I'm
unsure if it sold or what it sold for. It was titled "75 Miles South of El
Paso", 1953 oil on canvas 16 x 20. So less than half of the size of this
painting, it had the same cacti and Red Yucca. In 2019 prickly pear Cacti
Landscape by Salinas brough $125,000 with the buyers premium at the same David
Dike Fine Art.

The paper on this frame possibly covers the title of this painting, I'm tempted
to remove it but I'm going to try my best not to as the old brittle paper does
help date the painting and I really like to leave things as I found them. No
damage or restorations whatsoever to the painting, thoroughly examined under
both natural and UV light.

Porfirio Salinas (November 6, 1910 – April 18, 1973) was an early Texas
landscape painter who is recognized for his depictions of the Texas Hill Country
in the springtime. He was one of the first Mexican American artists to become
nationally recognized for his paintings. He was described by The New York Times
as being United States President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite painter. Works by
Salinas are displayed in the Texas State Capitol, the Texas Governor's Mansion
and in a number of museums including the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas and
the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.

Early history
Salinas was born on November 6, 1910, near Bastrop, Texas. He came from a family
of Mexican American tenant farmers, his father Porfirio G. Salinas and his
mother Clara G. Chavez Salinas leaving the farm for San Antonio when Porfirio
was a child. Salinas was a precocious talent who drew and painted from the time
he was a small boy and received encouragement from his teachers. He had little
formal education and left school when he was young in order to work in an art
supply store. When he was fifteen he met the English-born landscape artist
Robert William Wood (1889–1979) at the store.

Salinas went to work in Wood's studio in 1925, where he learned the basics of
being a professional painter. He stretched Wood's canvasses, and learned to
frame paintings, how to mix paints and how to prepare canvas under Wood's
supervision. Wood was a very capable businessman, and Salinas learned how to
sell and market his art from the English painter. Salinas accompanied Wood and
the Spanish-born artist and teacher José Arpa (1858–1952) on sketching trips to
the hills and valleys surrounding San Antonio where they painted blooming
wildflowers in the spring and the Texas Red Oak in the fall. With his talent and
hard work he was soon capable of professional work.

Professional career
Salinas began painting professionally in 1930, when he was twenty years old.[4]
His early work was influenced by his mentor Robert Wood's paintings.[5] He
painted many scenes of Texas bluebonnets, the state flower, which were sold to
tourists by the artists and galleries in San Antonio, Texas. In 1939 he began
working with the art dealer Dewey Bradford (1896–1985), who sold paintings,
frames and art supplies in the state capital of Austin.

National recognition
While Salinas sold his work steadily, by 1960 he was known primarily to Texas
collectors and tourists who visited San Antonio. In 1961, this changed rapidly
with the election of his collector Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–1973) to the Vice
Presidency of the United States. With his ascension from the United States
Senate to being Vice President, Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson
(1912–2007) purchased a large French-style chateau from the socialite and
heiress Perle Mesta (1889–1975). They decorated the house with French antiques
and tapestries that were already in the home, but the foyer was hung with Texas
wildflower paintings by Salinas. Lady Bird Johnson was quoted as saying, "I want
to see them when I open the door, to remind me of where I come from." At the
time of the President Kennedy's assassination, Salinas had completed a scene of
a horse drinking titled "Rocky Creek" that was meant to be presented to Kennedy
during his ill-fated visit to Dallas. Lyndon Johnson told the Washington press
that Porfirio Salinas was "his favorite artist." President Johnson also
presented a Salinas painting to President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz of Mexico as an
official gift from the United States. The patronage of the President was a
tremendous boost to the artist's career and during the 1960s, his work sold
briskly for ever higher prices. The Johnsons' Salinas paintings remain in the
collection of the LBJ Ranch today. President and Lady Bird Johnson were both
advocates and admirers of wildflowers. Lady Bird Johnson will always remain
linked to the subject of wildflowers because of her "Beautify America" campaign
and the Highway Beautification Act, which was passed by the United States
Congress in 1965. As part of that effort, many miles of Texas roadsides were
seeded with Texas bluebonnets, Lupinus texensis, the flowers that Salinas is
known for painting.

Death and posthumous reputation
Salinas was recognized by the city of his birth, Bastrop, Texas in 1960, when he
was fifty years old. He had a solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio
in 1962. His work was widely published by the New York Graphic Society, which
added to his national reputation. In 1967 his work illustrated a book titled
Bluebonnets and Cactus that was published in Austin.

Salinas died on April 18, 1973, after a brief illness. He was memorialized in
the City of Austin with Porfirio Salinas Day in 1973. Ruth Goddard wrote a book
titled Porfirio Salinas that was published two years after his death. There is a
Youth Art Exhibition showcasing work by K-12 students, named after the artist,
held each year in Bastrop. In celebration of the centennial of Salinas' birth,
the Witte Museum mounted an exhibition titled Porfirio Salinas: Painting South
Texas that opened on October 16, 2010, and ran to March 20, 2011.

Artistic production
The professional career of Porfirio Salinas stretched to more than forty years.
According to the art historian Jeffrey Morseburg, he is estimated to have
painted between two and three thousand works. His work is divided among a number
of subjects, but Hill Country landscapes of the Texas bluebonnets predominate.
The bluebonnet landscape has remained eternally popular with both collectors of
historic Texas paintings and contemporary artists. Salinas also painted many
scenes of Texas red oak trees in the autumn and prickly pear cactus. There were
also scenes of the Texas desert in the Texas Panhandle and of arid West Texas.
Salinas made trips to Mexico and painted rural Mexican villages and the
volcanoes that are south of Mexico City. For Mexican American audiences, Salinas
painted small scenes of bullfights, cockfights and Mexican fandangos.

Personal life
Salinas married Maria Bonillas, a Mexican woman who worked for the Mexican
National Railways, in San Antonio in 1943. They had a single child, Christina
Maria Salinas, who was born in 1945. Maria Bonillas Salinas helped manage her
husband's career. The Salinas home and studio was located at 2723 Buena Vista
Street in San Antonio. It consists of a small stone home with a detached studio.

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Antique Russian Icon Hand painted on wood panel St George Slaying the Dragon

    1 in stock

Antique Russian Icon Hand painted on wood panel. 100% hand painted from the late 19th to early 20th century. 12.25" tall x 10.25" wide in good condition with minor wear to edge shown. Some stable cracks in paint. This Icon and others I'll be listing are all antique Icons over 100 years old all from one collection purchased 25-30 years ago from top Auction houses that specialize in these. Most of the lots are too old for me to find the lot information and I just don't have time to try to figure out the artists etc. so I am just quickly grading them based on Size, quality of the painting, and condition.
