c1940's Matilde Poulat screw back earrings 1.25" x 1" with no issues. 14.8 grams.MAT-MATILDE POULAT & RICARDO SALAS JEWELRY Matl is the mark that appears on some of the most beautiful and unique jewelry in Mexico. Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl, has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water, atl.As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among Mexico’s intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art.Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different pieces.Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a comparison of their work.In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own. 1912 Josef J Brabender Impressionism Oil on Board. I do not know a whole lot<br>about this artist, but I do know in the 30's and 40's he painted a lot of<br>miniatures. I believe he started off painting in Mexico then moved to Alaska.<br>Most of his miniatures were a thicker impasto paint in a similar style to this<br>one. I found a result of a 3" x 4" painting by this artist bringing $675 on ebay<br>in 2016, and a 2" square bringing $335 at Bonhams. 7.25" square painting 11"<br>square framed. No issues with painting, appropriate wear to frame.

Chavez<br>I began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father,<br>Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as<br>to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them.<br>Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually<br>strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. Though<br>fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and<br>reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished<br>silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the<br>use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of<br>my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones<br>(agates, quartz, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my<br>selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to<br>shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall<br>design.<br><br>Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made<br>it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s<br>studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how<br>sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces.<br>I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general<br>public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person<br>demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point<br>to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. Torborg Lindberg-Carlsson (1908-1980) and other carved wood figures. Tallest 6 7/8", it's the TL figure, the other two I believe are European but not totally sure of carver or even the Country they were made. All approximately the same era. One appears to be signed LL on the base. Selling all three with no issuesTL 1908 - 1980 Torborg Lindberg-Carlsson from Storbäck in Dorotea, Västerbotten. Torborg was born in Högland and then moved at the age of 4 to Röttanberg in Vilhelmina. Torborg found his home in Storbäck. Her creations mainly resulted in the production of smaller statuettes connected to Sami culture. The attention she attracted also led to church decorations in, among others, Ormsjö, Högland's chapel and Risbäck church. At first she carved in aspen, but after a while she switched to Al, which was the material she mainly used, she bought the wood home and let it dry, she had wood for several years lying around to dry.  She usually had a number of figures that were in production where she switched between the figures, on the tray where the figures were usually on the kitchen table where the production took place. Then the figures were painted with watercolor paint in the Southern Sami colors. On average, she carved 2-3 old men per day, which were sold to various customers, but the sales were interrupted until Hemslöjden, where she then received honorary degrees for her work.

Emil Zettler (1878-1946) 1933 Chicago worlds fair bronze medallion. Fantastic Medal art deco period and style 2,25" wide. Emil Zettler - March 30, 1878 -- January 10, 1946) American sculptor, born in Karlsruhe, Germany (or, Chicago, Illinois ) and active in Chicago. The Art Institute of Chicago, where Zettler studied, awarded him the Potter Palmer Gold Medal in 1917 for his colored plaster sculpture Job . It was among the first works of art by a Chicagoan showcased at the Arts Club of Chicago.He often worked with Prairie School architect George Grant Elmslie. He taught sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, rising to become head of its School of Industrial Arts. In 1931, Zettler married Edythe L. Flack, one of the Institute's assistant deans. The Institute commissioned Zettler to redesign its Frank G. Logan Medal. Among his students there was John Weaver. Zettler was tasked with designing the official medals for the Century of Progress World's Fair in 1933.

Franz Kriwanek (American, 1920-1994) 1965 Mid Century Modern Texas Studio<br>Pottery Framed Plaque 9.25" x 16" total 13.25" x 7" plaque, absolutely no damage<br>or wear.<br><br>Franz Kriwanek (American, 1920-1994) artist, potter, professor and author renown<br>for blending clays and glazes from soils and minerals of the San Juan Mountains<br>near Silverton Colorado. Pottery made from these mixtures is very durable with a<br>distinctive allure. When Germany conquered Czechoslovakia, Kriwanek was forcibly<br>drafted into the German Army. He was then sent to North Africa desert, but one<br>morning when he and the other forced draftees awoke, they were alone. Kriwanek<br>was sent to the Prisoner of War Camp in Clarinda, where he, an artist by trade,<br>began painting again, specifically illustrations of the camp. Once the war was<br>over, he was released and returned to Europe, where he lived in the Netherlands<br>for four years. In fact, Winegardner said a family in Shenandoah sent Kriwanek<br>to the University of Iowa where he could obtain his teaching degree. He then<br>taught in Shenandoah for one year, followed by Mount Pleasant, Iowa.<br><br>In 1948, Franz Kriwanek settled in Sweden to study Sino-Swedish stoneware under<br>the masters Wilhelm Koge and Stig Lindberg. While in Sweden he had 7 one man<br>exhibits.In 1963, He arrived in Texas, taking a position on the art faculty at<br>Texas Tech University. For months after he arrived in West Texas, he sought a<br>clay suitable to stand 2,400 degrees. He found it in a quarry in Snyder, Texas.<br>He believed in using local materials and developed a series of glazes which have<br>cotton gin ashes as they main component. These glazes follow the same traditions<br>of Chinese ash glazes.<br><br>“Franz Kriwanek was born on May 1, 1920 in Worschach, Austria.<br>Winegardner said when Germany conquered Czechoslovakia, Kriwanek was forcibly<br>drafted into the German Army. He was then sent to North Africa desert, but one<br>morning when he and the other forced draftees awoke, they were alone.<br>“The Germans were gone. He then taught in Shenandoah<br>for one year, followed by Mount Pleasant, Iowa.<br>“He ended his teaching career as chair of ceramics at the University of Texas at<br>Lubbock,” said Winegardner. “He ended up in Silverton, Colorado with Silverton<br>Mountain Pottery. He passed away in 1994, but his pieces have recently become<br>overly popular.”
