Howard Sice Hopi/Laguna Sterling silver/mixed metal copper pendant/necklace. Mixed metals, made of Sterling, copper, and brass. The Chain is woven copper, brass, and sterling. No issues, circa last quarter of the 20th century. 25" long. Howard Sice (Hopi - Laguna) Arizona, USA Native American jewelry artist. He is self taught. Over his career, he has been the recipient of countless awards, including Best of Show and 1st Place. He was raised on the Laguna Pueblo of Paraje but split time with relatives in Hopi so his work displays strong influences from both cultures. He served twenty years in the Air Force inclusive of a year in Vietnam. While in the service he obtained a degree in a special area of medical research (lab work). While still in the service, in 1972, he started working in jewelry in 1972. He has added to his skills over the years. It was once he started engraving in 1985 that his metal work became distinctly identifiable. He has fairly recently started working with several very interesting materials. The first is Niobium. I probably shouldn‘t even mention it given I sold out of the pieces I bought before I got a chance to post them but I will get more at some point. Niobium is a metal that, when oxidized, can take on some beautiful colors. The other metal Howard is working in is Argentium silver. Standard Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Argentium is classified as Sterling as it still has a 92.5% silver content but a small portion of the copper has been replaced by Germanium. The result is startling. There are a number of advantages to the artist in how they can work with the material but to the end user (and me) the difference is the huge reduction is tarnishing. The finished work also is amazingly bright, noticeably more so than even the most polished standard Sterling. Argentium requires makers (artists) be registered with them to utilize the distinct hallmark of a flying unicorn. Howard is a registered user and is moving over to the use of Argentium almost exclusively. I will mark on each piece if it is Argentium. Artist may USE Argentium without registration but may not use the hallmark. I had some work by Myron Panteah that I‘m all but certain was Argentium but was not hallmarked as such.

No issues, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Cecil Ashley is a respected Navajo Master silversmith who signs his pieces “CA sterling. Cecil is well known for his quality of material and meticulous workmanship in his one-of-a-kind collectible designs. He is best known for his extraordinary lapidary skills, whose signature style is creating some of the best mosaic inlay work today. Cecil worked for the Brown family, Browns Trading Company in Safford, Arizona in the mid-80‘s and had access to top grade Morenci turquoise, which he used to create many beautiful jewelry pieces. There he honed his craft before venturing out on his own and establishing his own studio. Most of Cecils pieces have a variety of colorful, inlaid materials including spiny oyster, onyx, lapis, opal and the rare Dragon Skin or Brown Spider Web turquoise. These stones are most often inlaid in asymmetrical settings. His other silverwork is classic Navajo stamp work with classically set stones.

He passed away in 2010. His work is displayed in Museums across the country and in many publications.

Jan Pomianowski Turquoise, baroque pearl, Butterscotch Amber sterling necklace. Jan Pomianowski was born in Gdynia, but he has lived and worked in Kashubia for over twenty years. He graduated in painting at the State College of Fine Arts, currently functioning as the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He has been associated with the jewelry industry for a quarter of a century, he has been constantly developing new collections in which he often modifies style, materials, concepts and distinctions. Therefore, each jewelry has new features, which makes Jan Pomianowski‘s collections so sought after for uniqueness. In designing and creating jewelry, the artist often draws inspiration from the world of fairy tales, fairy tales, as well as from his personal experiences. An example is the story of one of the rings in our collection with the image of an owl carved in amber sitting on a branch. Owls remembered from the earliest childhood, because living in a tree neighboring his family home. Probably the effect of such an approach to work are emotions, and these are positive emotions that you experience when interacting with this jewelry. In addition to the extraordinary imagination, the artist is also characterized by reliability, precision and the ability to choose the method of implementation to the assumed concept. Finished jewelry therefore consists of detailed elements, perfectly matched to the whole, creating a unique, hand-created product. All items are color and functional. This means that the artist‘s works, in addition to their artistic function, can and do have practical functions. A notable example is the shaving kit by Jan Pomianowski, consisting of a bowl, razor with replaceable blade and brush with natural badger hair (product available in our gallery). The artist‘s commitment to his work shows his active participation in many of the most important fairs and events of the jewelery world. Jan Pomianowski participates in domestic and foreign fairs, e.g. Amberif, Inhorgenta or Tucson. An interesting anecdote is the fact that during the visit of the Norwegian Royal Couple to Poland in 2012, the then presidential couple, the State of Komorowski, gave JKM Sonji a set by Jan Pomianowski. This set was named after the queen of Poland - Anna Jagiellon and comes from the series "Great Queens".

Tommy Singer, Diné Jeweler Diné of the Navajo Nation artist Tommy Singer grew up on the Navajo Reservation and was taught silversmithing by his father, beginning at the age of seven. In the 1960s he invented the "chip-inlay" technique of using turquoise or coral chips in the silverwork. This technique has become widespread in his community. He also used stamps and work in overlay. Thomas Singer (1938 - 2014) was active ca. 1960s until his death. He was known for his silver, chip inlay jewelry. Tommy was the husband of Rose Singer, brother of Charlie Singer, William Singer, and Jackie Singer.

This has an old 60‘s-70‘s mark on the back labeling it as Bisbee, the center and the right stones look like they could be Bisbee, the other with a tad of green looks more like some higher grade Royston. I didn‘t mine these of course and probably would not confidently call them Bisbee without Bisbee having been written on the back long ago. There are many grades and forms of Bisbee.

As a young man, he attended school in Santa Fe and served in the US Marines. Ramon began his silver working career in 1978 at Hopicrafts then located near the village of Hotevilla. His designs come from his experiences in life - clouds, thunderbolts and rain - important in an area with no irrigation for crops; and bear, spider, antelope, prayer feathers, kachinas, kokopelli, corn - the clan religious symbols, the basis of Hopi life. Ramon‘s work is characterized by the very heavy weight (thickness) silver he uses and his laser like precision in cutting out his designs and meticulous background stamping - nothing but the highest quality. He is a very fine man who we are proud to call our friend! Ramon uses his name stamped into the reverse of his pieces as his hallmark. Earlier examples of his work were marked with a composite RA. Ramon lives in Hotevilla. His son Cheston was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp and graduated from Arizona State University where he obtained his Master‘s Degree in Criminal Justice. At present, Cheston is living in Artesia, NM and working as an instructor at the Federal Police Academy. Early in his life, award-winning designer, Fritz Casuse, showed natural aptitude for the arts which his family encouraged. Boyd Tsosie Navajo 14k gold, diamond, opal, and coral beaded necklace. All of the metal on this necklace is tested and guaranteed solid 14k gold, weight and measurements in pictures. No issues, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Natural Opal and Mediterranean coral beads and inlay outside the pendant. My monitor is off, but these pics look really bad to me. It‘s gold, it‘s beautiful. Boyd Tsosie is a jeweler who draws inspiration from the rich heritage of his Navajo traditions. Born in 1954, he has been making jewelry since he was sixteen years of age. In 1979, Boyd Tsosie was only 23. He was already among the top echelon of Southwestern jewelers / silversmiths (both past and present). Boyd was featured in Arizona Highways along with other greats like Jesse Monongye, his brother Richard Tsosie, Gibson Nez, James Little, and Larry Golsch. These Navajo silversmiths all would go on to build fine reputations and set the standards you see today for Southwest jewelry. Kenneth Begaye, a teacher at the Navajo Community College on the Navajo Reservation, inspired Boyd at a young age. Boyd gives credit to Kenneth for teaching him his trade. Kenneth Begay has been deemed the father of modern Navajo jewelry. Before Kenneth Begay, Navajo Indian Jewelry was much like it had been for the past 100 years. Navajo jewelry had a strong Spanish influence. Which is entirely understandable since it was a Mexican silversmith (who learned from the Spanish) that taught the first Navajo to work silver. Boyd considers Kenneth Begay a major influence and carries on today the work of Kenneth Begay. Boyd Tsosie continues to move Navajo jewelry forward and he, like Kenneth Begay, generously shares his knowledge with other silversmiths. Boyd, working with his brother Richard, first gained widespread recognition for his soldered flower and leaf designs. Later, he moved his jewelry designs to a more complex, contemporary look. Over the years Boyd has developed a contemporary style of work primarily in 14K gold combined with turquoise, coral, lapis, and sugilite. Boyd feels that he is creating “tomorrows tradition in Navajo jewelry by being given the rights and prayers by his elders to create his special pieces. He is featured in Navajo Indian Jewelry and Enduring Traditions by Jerry and Lois Jacka and North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Dubin. In recent years, Boyd and his son have given back to the Navajo Nation with a nonprofit to give counsel and help to those with substance challenges.

90‘s Santa Fe Sterling silver, Sugilite, turquoise, lapis inlay beaded necklace. Weight and measurements in pics, all solid sterling. NO issues. Unresearched by me unsigned in any way, incredible piece 18" long necklace. Very high quality piece from an extremely high quality collection put together in the 90‘s. These inlaid slide beads are very unusual and amazing. The necklace looks Balinese but high quality. Weight and measurements in pictures. 18" necklace, Pendant is hand hammered with a very thick gauge solid 14k gold sphere. 1862 R. Blackinton & Co Founded North Attleboro, MA As the Civil War raged, Roswell Blackinton (Susanne Ross Blackinton-Juaires great-great-grandfather) co-founded R. Blackinton & Co with Walter Ballou; a full silver house that specialized in silver and goldsmithing, engraving, enameling, metal spinning, and more. The company stands as a significant chapter in the history of American silverware and jewelry manufacturing. Into the early 20th century, R. Blackinton & Company increased its lines to include, at various times, sterling silver jewelry, dresser ware, fancy table pieces, novelties, and 14 karat gold merchandise. In 1937, the company added an exclusive line of fine Sterling flatware and hollowware for retail jewelers. It remained for over 100 years under the management of its founding families until its sale in 1967. One of the companys notable achievements occurred in the mid-1960s when their Marie Louise flatware pattern was selected by the U.S. State Department.
