She learned to make<br>traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during<br>the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught<br>her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni<br>trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her<br>own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers.<br>“There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she<br>said.<br><br>The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of<br>their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her<br>jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed,<br>natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished<br>turquoise stone. Vintage Richard Tsosie Navajo Tufa Cast Sterling Peyote Bird Necklace and Pendant<br>with amethyst and Sugilite. Pendant 3.75" tall x 1 5/8" wide, necklace 21.5"<br>long. I believe the necklace was made by Richard Tsosie also. 37.8 grams total<br>weight. Both necklace and pendant tested sterling, both amazing quality.<br><br>Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark techniqie of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation,” and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career.<br><br>Born in 1956, Richard has been a jeweler since the mid 1970s. He learned jewelry making from his brother Boyd and from Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College in Arizona. He quickly progressed from basic tasks of cutting and polishing stones to the more complex process of inlay.<br><br>Richard’s contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky.”<br><br>His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. He likes to incorporate humor into his work, as can be seen in his<br>wonderful lizard pins that are designed to perch on the wearer's shoulder, one<br>of his unique designs.<br><br>Growing up in Albuquerque, away from his father's Zuni Pueblo and his mother's<br>Jicarilla Apache Reservation, Allenroy was not always interested in his native<br>heritage, much less in making jewelry. In high school, he became interested in<br>fancy dancing, one of his favorite activities through today. At this same time,<br>his father took up jewelry making to support their family after being disabled<br>in an accident, but it still did not interest Allenroy. Instead, he earned a<br>degree in technical engineering. It was not until his father died several years<br>later, when his mother gave him his father's tools, that Allenroy realized this<br>was his inheritance and heritage. Today he considers his father to be his<br>strongest inspiration.<br><br>This feeling was reinforced one time when he was having a creative block. He<br>found a lizard in a shed he was cleaning, and was captivated by its colors and<br>shapes. "It was like someone told me, 'make inlay lizard jewelry.' I felt it was<br>my dad telling me to do that." It seemed logical after that to move on to<br>turtles and frogs.<br><br>Allenroy is interested in educating as well. His sons, Ignacio and Kyle, have<br>already started making jewelry, and have won awards for their work. Allenroy<br>also teaches school children about native heritage, trying to break down the<br>image of the "stereotypical Hollywood Indian." He performs a solo show that<br>incorporates storytelling, dancing and flute playing at schools. Composed of a large Central amethyst, Charoite, Spiny oyster shell,<br>and Opal. 44.9 grams.<br><br>Doug Nava was born and grew up in Southwest Colorado. His father was Apache and<br>his grandfather(mother’s father) was a Taos Indian. Doug’s grandfather’s name<br>was on the list of students at St. John’s school in Taos.<br><br>Doug went to college in Gunnison in Western Colorado. He earned a degree in art<br>and was also self taught as he went along. His wife, Elizabeth, also has an art<br>degree. One year after graduation, Doug bought Bennett’s Indian and Lapidary. He<br>made jewelry and sold it in his shop. His jewelry has evolved over the years<br>from Navajo style to fine inlay work.
