No apparent damage, not examined outside of frame, it's<br>been framed a long time obviously as there is wear to the frame which of course<br>isn't as old as the tile. Crazing on tile as shown.<br><br>Trent Tile Company, founded in 1882, produced a wide variety of decorative<br>embossed tiles in numerous glaze colors during the last two decades of the 19th<br>century. The company's first designer was Isaac Broome, well recognized at the<br>time for his modeling of the human figure, face and profile. He was followed by<br>William Gallimore, a designer and modeler from England who also had a<br>well-established reputation. Over the years the company's success paralleled the<br>country's economy overall; the factory eventually closed in 1939. Today Trent<br>tiles are among the most collectible, especially among the lovers of Victorian<br>art tiles.

These are white porcelain, not the cream shown in the pic.<br><br>The term "Dresden porcelain" refers more to an artistic movement than a<br>particular line of figurines or dinnerware. Several decorating studios emerged<br>in this Saxony capital in response to the rise of "Romanticism" during the 19th<br>century. Dresden was an important center of this artistic, cultural and<br>intellectual movement, which attracted painters, sculptors, poets, philosophers<br>and porcelain decorators alike. In 1883, in response to the exciting<br>developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators<br>registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular "Dresden<br>style" was born.

David Salazar Sports and music Themed Limited Production 2016 Toothpick Holder KC. Signed DPS KC 2016, My guess is this was made for a club of some sort as he also made toothpicks for the Toothpick collectors clubs for certain years. No damage, very special limited production item with no damage. 2.75" tall David Salazar has been a glassblower and designer for over 50 years. He began in 1972 at Lundberg Studios in Davenport, California. Using new techniques to decorate glass, he eventually became their chief designer. Some of his pieces during this period were exhibited at the Corning Museum of Glass. It was during this time that he became associated with Larry Selman, one of the foremost paperweight dealers in the world. David’s work has been featured in many of Selman’s catalogues, as well as books for the paperweight collector. David also exhibited pieces at the Tiffany Exhibit for the Museum of Art in Chicago. In 1981, David left Lundberg’s to form his own studio. David’s work in miniatures led to doing marbles in flower and sea life patterns, as well as traditional swirls. His Angelfish marble was featured in the April 1988 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine. Today, his marbles are some of his most popular items, and he carries over 30 different kinds. His work is featured in many periodicals and reference books, including Marilyn Barrett’s book, Immies, Aggies, Shooters and Swirls, The Art of the Paperweight by L.H. Selman, and Mark Block’s, Contemporary Marbles and Related Art Glass. toothpickdrawer

  • 1890's American Art pottery Kensington Tile 6" - Estate Fresh Austin

1890's American Art pottery Kensington Tile 6"

    1 in stock

1890's American Art pottery Kensington Tile 6" square, small chip on reverse side, no other significant issues. Kensington Art Tile Newport, Kentucky 1885 - 1895 Tile Heritage Collection Gift of Bob Smyth In 1881 the Hatt brothers, Arthur and Otto, established a tile works at Elm and Lowell Streets in Newport, Kentucky. Their company, Hatt & Hatt, was taken over by a group of investors in 1885 and renamed the Kensington Art Tile Company. During its short tenure as a manufacturer of dust-pressed art tiles, the combination of portraits and floral interpretations was most impressive due to the artistic talents of Herman Mueller and Mary Louise McLaughlin, among others. From an 1891 published report in “Illustrated Cincinnati” (courtesy of the Tile Heritage Library): “The main building is a substantial brick structure, three stories and basement in height and 40 by 200 feet in dimensions. The equipment for art tile-making purposes is of the most elaborate, complete and modern description, and includes four large kilns, which bake to the extent of 14,000 feet of tile at one filling. “The processes of preparation of the crude clay are as elaborate as they are complicated. The clay is first puddled and forced through great sieves by steam power. It is then dried and ground to a fine powder, and then moulded and pressed into the tile shapes, which are carefully baked, then removed and coated with the enamel and glazing liquids. They are then finally placed in the kilns and thoroughly glazed, when they are finally removed to the sorting and packing room, and forthwith shipped to destination. “The most extreme care is taken to have all the materials pure and accurately prepared, and the result is a perfection of quality, an elaborateness of finish, and a beauty and delicacy of colors and tints, nowhere else attempted, much less duplicated. An average force of 100 hands is employed, and ten teams are kept constantly busy.”

William Lawrence deMatteo (1923-1988) Hand Hammered Sterling silver leaf dish<br>6.5" x 4.5" x 114.5 grams with no issues.<br><br>William Lawrence deMatteo (12 October 1923–14 May 1988), silversmith and master<br>craftsman, was born in New York City and was the son of Elizabeth Rommelman<br>deMatteo and William Gaitano deMatteo, an accomplished silversmith who<br>immigrated to the United States from Acciaroli, Salerno, Italy, with his family<br>when he was a boy. William Lawrence deMatteo grew up in suburban Bergenfield,<br>New Jersey, and attended schools in nearby Tenafly, all the while observing and<br>absorbing his father's skillful work. DeMatteo began studying sculpture and fine<br>arts at Columbia University in 1941, but after the United States entered World<br>War II he joined the navy in November 1942 and served in the Pacific theater as<br>a torpedo er pilot. On 14 November 1946, in Asbury Park, he married Jayne<br>Walpole, a painter who later cofounded an art gallery. They had three daughters<br>and one son. DeMatteo resumed his apprenticeship with his father and may have<br>continued his studies at Columbia before being recalled to active duty with the<br>navy during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1953.<br><br>Bill deMatteo, as he was usually known, visited the restored capital of colonial<br>Virginia while he was still in the service and asked to see the silversmith's<br>shop. Told that Colonial Williamsburg had none, he saw an opportunity for<br>himself. Soon after deMatteo left the navy, he returned to Williamsburg and in<br>July 1953 joined the staff as a silversmith. He created the entire silversmith<br>program and was responsible for the James Geddy Silversmith's Shop, where he<br>trained shopkeepers in interpreting craftsmanship to visitors, instructed and<br>supervised apprentices in all kinds of metalworking, and handcrafted<br>reproductions of eighteenth-century silver items for sale in the shop. DeMatteo<br>also revived colonial silversmith James Craig's Williamsburg shop, "At the Sign<br>of the Golden Ball." In January 1963 deMatteo was promoted to Staff Master<br>Craftsman and Master Silversmith.<br><br>In accord with Colonial Williamsburg's motto—that the future may learn from the<br>past—deMatteo spent much of his time in educational and advertising efforts.<br>Working from a research report that Colonial Williamsburg staff member Thomas K.<br>Bullock had prepared, in 1956 deMatteo published The Silversmith in<br>Eighteenth-Century Williamsburg–An Account of his Life & Times, & of his Craft,<br>a short history of silversmithing and techniques used in colonial days. DeMatteo<br>also provided much of the information for a 1971 video program, Silversmith of<br>Williamsburg, and the accompanying manual. In the film he demonstrated every<br>stage of making an eighteenth-century silver coffeepot, beginning with receiving<br>silver coins or scraps to be melted, discussing details of the commission with a<br>customer, methods and design, and shaping the piece with his hammer and<br>burnishing the completed coffeepot. In 1971 and 1972, deMatteo studied design,<br>silversmithing, and methods at Sir John Cass Department of Art of the City<br>London Polytechnic, and with professional London silversmiths; in 1975 he became<br>the first American craftsman to be elected an honorary foreign associate of the<br>Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, in London.<br><br>As his skill became apparent to staff and visitors, deMatteo received many<br>requests to design and craft commemorative gifts. A town-crier's bell that he<br>made for Colonial Williamsburg to present to Sir Winston Churchill in 1955<br>appeared in a picture of Churchill on the cover of Life magazine the following<br>year. DeMatteo designed presentation pieces for the White House Correspondents'<br>Association annual presentations to Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B.<br>Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Jimmy Carter. He designed<br>numerous handcrafted gifts for visiting presidents, queens, kings, and prime<br>ministers, and the Department of State commissioned deMatteo to craft silver<br>trays for presentation to Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli prime<br>minister Menachem Begin at the Camp David Accords in 1978.<br><br>For a commission from the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1976 in<br>recognition of the centennial of Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the<br>telephone, deMatteo produced an abstract silver piece, a departure from his<br>colonial-style masterpieces, inscribed with Bell's first words transmitted over<br>his telephone. Despite his finesse, he was a modest man who insisted that he was<br>a craftsman, not an artist. DeMatteo was content to make beautiful utilitarian<br>objects that he believed did not rise to the level of imagination and required<br>of an artist. His devotion to excellence was acknowledged by the American<br>Institute of Architects, which in 1960 gave him its craftsmanship medal for high<br>achievement in industrial arts.<br><br>After twenty-six years with Colonial Williamsburg, in 1979 deMatteo left and<br>moved with his family to Alexandria. Together with his son, Chip deMatteo, and<br>Philip Thorp, a colleague at Colonial Williamsburg, he opened Hand & Hammer<br>Silversmiths. DeMatteo continued to explore and extend his range beyond<br>eighteenth-century forms. He was an affable man, noted for his disarming smile.<br>He was an intense perfectionist who was deaf to his surroundings while sitting<br>at his bench shaping precious metals with his hammer. He was also a resourceful<br>artisan who was known to make his own hammers when he failed to find suitable<br>ones in the market. DeMatteo once remarked that "being a silversmith is just a<br>delightful, lovely way to go through life" and that while he was not fully<br>satisfied with his silver work he was "very satisfied with the life I lead."<br>William Lawrence deMatteo died of leukemia at an Alexandria hospital on 14 May<br>1988. His son, who continued to work at the Hand & Hammer Silversmiths,<br>preserved his ashes.

    1 in stock

c1920 Large Pickard Art Deco Gold Encrusted Coffee Pot. This is by far the best piece of gold encrusted china I've ever had, the design on this is amazing. I<br>typically prefer the hand painted pieces with heavy gold, but this piece is the exception. Very large piece measuring 12" tall x 10.25" handle to spout. It's in<br>mint condition with no gold wear, no chips, cracks, scratches or other issues.<br>Guaranteed from the second quarter of the 20th century. The mark has been<br>completely covered in thick gold. Likely made in Europe and decorated by Pickard or one of the other high end decorating studios in Chicago of the period. There there were one of two European studios that did this quality of work also. tw272

    c1950 Moorcroft Art Deco Ashtray

    1 in stock

c1950 Moorcroft Ashtray. No cracks, chips, or restorations. Some expected crazing, 6" wide diagonally. History of Moorcroft Pottery Compared to many other Stoke Pottery brands, Moorcroft started quite late, created by William Moorcroft in 1897. Now, however, it’s a worldwide brand and has been growing in quality and prestige ever since its inception. In 1928, Moorcroft was appointed ‘Potters to H.M. The Queen’, cementing the quality and demand of the brand. After William died in 1945, his son Walter Moorcroft took over the responsibilities his father had held and became the sole Moorcroft designer. Walter introduced many of the exotic flowers that are seen and loved in the designs today. Walter retired from this role in 1986, and Moorcroft have since seen a steady increase in designers and have even developed the Design Studio, a place which now hosts five world-class ceramic designers. From its early conception, Moorcroft pottery was in high demand from prestigious department stores such as Harrods, Liberty of London, and even Tiffany & Co. This demand cemented the pottery brand as one of artistic quality and a solid investment, which we can still see to be true to this day. isshelf

Olga Quezada Mata Ortiz pottery jar

Olga Quezada Mata Ortiz pottery jar 5" wide x 3 7/8" tall with no damage or detectable wear. Olga Quezada Hernandez is one of the first generation master potters whose work is highly sought after in Mata Ortiz, Mexico. She is married to Humberto Ledezma, and her son is the very well known potter Guadalupe Ledezma. Olga Quezada works in the traditional cuadricula pattern of squares, and favors the use of a gorgeous deep earthy brown clay that stands out from the rest. Her work is easily identifiable for it's beauty, precision and precisely painted design. Olga is one of the few original first generation potters that are still faithfully crafting gorgeous pottery, and her work bears all the hallmarks of light weight museum quality work. There is so much elegance in this piece. Contemporary, modern and sleek.. yet using all of the traditional techniques of Mata Ortiz pottery. With all of the precision in this piece, it is hard to believe that it was hand polished using an agate stone and painted with long strands of human hair. The clay used in this piece has been dug from the local countryside, and then refined to remove most impurities. This allows the clay to be used in hand forming this pot without the use of a potters wheel! tw147

  • 1940's Rosemeade Dakota Pottery Elephant Salt and pepper shakers - Estate Fresh Austin

1940's Rosemeade Dakota Pottery Elephant Salt and pepper shakers

    1 in stock

1940's Rosemeade Dakota Pottery Elephant Salt and pepper shakers. Much less<br>common in this trunk down form but I have seen this exact mold with original<br>labels, plus it's obviously Rosemeade clay, uncommon color also. 2.5" tall with<br>no damage.<br><br>Rosemeade pottery has become a popular collectible today because its creator,<br>Laura Taylor Hughes, chose subjects which continually fascinate people--animals,<br>birds, fish--and modeled authentic characterizations of their living<br>counterparts.  These innovative designs were then accurately hand painted in<br>nature's vivid coloring.<br>Laura Taylor combined education, experience and creative skill.  Educated at<br>UND, Taylor was a student and assistant to nationally known director, Margaret<br>Cable.  After a short period of making Dickota pottery at the Dickinson Clay<br>Products Company, Laura Taylor was appointed state supervisor of the North<br>Dakota Works Administration (WPA).<br>An opportunity to demonstrate pottery making at the 1939 New York World's Fair<br>changed Laura Taylor's life as she met Robert J. Hughes, zealous booster of<br>state enterprise.  Together they founded the Wahpeton Pottery Company in January<br>1940 and married three years later.<br>Many of Laura Taylor's naturalistic designs reflected the native flora and fauna<br>of her North Dakota farm childhood.  A wide range of other products included<br>place souvenirs, human forms, functional items and advertising pieces. <br>Observing trends, Taylor met the needs and wishes of the public.  The company<br>name was changed to Rosemeade Potteries in 1953 for better name recognition and<br>remained successful while many other companies of that era did not survive.<br>Distinctive lustrous glazes created by Howard Lewis, production manager, set<br>Rosemeade apart, making it easily recognizable.  Metal oxides painted under the<br>glazes fired into colorful hues.  Lewis also threw swirl pottery vases and<br>pitchers.  He learned the swirl process while working at Niloak Pottery and<br>previously produced "Dickota Badlands" swirl pottery for the Dickinson Clay<br>Products Company.<br>Joe McLaughlin succeeded Lewis as production manager.  McLaughlin introduced<br>decorative decals, including those of wildlife artist Les Kouba, and accelerated<br>advertising specialties sales.  Rosemeade Potteries closed in 1961.<br>Although some early pottery and the swirl ware were thrown on the potter's<br>wheel, the majority of Rosemeade was cast in molds.  Most Rosemeade pottery is<br>identified with an impressed mark or an ink stamp of the company name in black<br>or blue lettering on the bottom.<br>tw254
