Mid Century Modern Marquetry Serving tray plaque with Kings and Queens holding g

    1 in stock

Mid Century Modern Marquetry plaque with Kings holding goblets. This is really fabulous, estate fresh period MCM from the 60's or 70's. Likely one of a kind, no identifying marks that I could find. One small blemish in queen to the right's neck, looks like an adams apple. 21.75" x 12.75"I'm fairly confident this was originally a drink tray due to the size/subject matter. But judging from the patina of the hooks and wire on the back in the 70's or even 60's they decided they wanted to look at it rather than spill drinks all over it. And while there are trays from this era with a more intricate design this is by far the coolest one I've seen. This is showing up really orange on my other monitor, It's not orange, it's "regular" wood colors. More typical colors, not pumpkin orange.

  • Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) Big Bend Texas/Mexico Landscape Oil on Canvas

Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) Big Bend Texas/Mexico Landscape Oil on Canvas

    1 in stock

Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) Big Bend Texas/Mexico Landscape South of El Paso.
100% guaranteed Original Oil on canvas painted by Porfirio Salinas in the 1960's
with no damage or restorations of any kind. Overall: 32 3/4 by 38 3/4 inches
24" x 30" painting. Salinas is not as well known for his west Texas/Northern
Mexico desert landscaped but he did do some. I'm sure it was more pleasant
sitting in a bluebonnet field close to home in the spring then it was sweating
in the desert, but a trained eye should be able to see this master's skill and
respect his diversity.

On Oct 18, 2008 a much smaller Porfirio Salinas landscape with a similar terrain
was offered for auction by David Dike Fine Art at a $15,000 starting price, I'm
unsure if it sold or what it sold for. It was titled "75 Miles South of El
Paso", 1953 oil on canvas 16 x 20. So less than half of the size of this
painting, it had the same cacti and Red Yucca. In 2019 prickly pear Cacti
Landscape by Salinas brough $125,000 with the buyers premium at the same David
Dike Fine Art.

The paper on this frame possibly covers the title of this painting, I'm tempted
to remove it but I'm going to try my best not to as the old brittle paper does
help date the painting and I really like to leave things as I found them. No
damage or restorations whatsoever to the painting, thoroughly examined under
both natural and UV light.

Porfirio Salinas (November 6, 1910 – April 18, 1973) was an early Texas
landscape painter who is recognized for his depictions of the Texas Hill Country
in the springtime. He was one of the first Mexican American artists to become
nationally recognized for his paintings. He was described by The New York Times
as being United States President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite painter. Works by
Salinas are displayed in the Texas State Capitol, the Texas Governor's Mansion
and in a number of museums including the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas and
the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.

Early history
Salinas was born on November 6, 1910, near Bastrop, Texas. He came from a family
of Mexican American tenant farmers, his father Porfirio G. Salinas and his
mother Clara G. Chavez Salinas leaving the farm for San Antonio when Porfirio
was a child. Salinas was a precocious talent who drew and painted from the time
he was a small boy and received encouragement from his teachers. He had little
formal education and left school when he was young in order to work in an art
supply store. When he was fifteen he met the English-born landscape artist
Robert William Wood (1889–1979) at the store.

Salinas went to work in Wood's studio in 1925, where he learned the basics of
being a professional painter. He stretched Wood's canvasses, and learned to
frame paintings, how to mix paints and how to prepare canvas under Wood's
supervision. Wood was a very capable businessman, and Salinas learned how to
sell and market his art from the English painter. Salinas accompanied Wood and
the Spanish-born artist and teacher José Arpa (1858–1952) on sketching trips to
the hills and valleys surrounding San Antonio where they painted blooming
wildflowers in the spring and the Texas Red Oak in the fall. With his talent and
hard work he was soon capable of professional work.

Professional career
Salinas began painting professionally in 1930, when he was twenty years old.[4]
His early work was influenced by his mentor Robert Wood's paintings.[5] He
painted many scenes of Texas bluebonnets, the state flower, which were sold to
tourists by the artists and galleries in San Antonio, Texas. In 1939 he began
working with the art dealer Dewey Bradford (1896–1985), who sold paintings,
frames and art supplies in the state capital of Austin.

National recognition
While Salinas sold his work steadily, by 1960 he was known primarily to Texas
collectors and tourists who visited San Antonio. In 1961, this changed rapidly
with the election of his collector Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–1973) to the Vice
Presidency of the United States. With his ascension from the United States
Senate to being Vice President, Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson
(1912–2007) purchased a large French-style chateau from the socialite and
heiress Perle Mesta (1889–1975). They decorated the house with French antiques
and tapestries that were already in the home, but the foyer was hung with Texas
wildflower paintings by Salinas. Lady Bird Johnson was quoted as saying, "I want
to see them when I open the door, to remind me of where I come from." At the
time of the President Kennedy's assassination, Salinas had completed a scene of
a horse drinking titled "Rocky Creek" that was meant to be presented to Kennedy
during his ill-fated visit to Dallas. Lyndon Johnson told the Washington press
that Porfirio Salinas was "his favorite artist." President Johnson also
presented a Salinas painting to President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz of Mexico as an
official gift from the United States. The patronage of the President was a
tremendous boost to the artist's career and during the 1960s, his work sold
briskly for ever higher prices. The Johnsons' Salinas paintings remain in the
collection of the LBJ Ranch today. President and Lady Bird Johnson were both
advocates and admirers of wildflowers. Lady Bird Johnson will always remain
linked to the subject of wildflowers because of her "Beautify America" campaign
and the Highway Beautification Act, which was passed by the United States
Congress in 1965. As part of that effort, many miles of Texas roadsides were
seeded with Texas bluebonnets, Lupinus texensis, the flowers that Salinas is
known for painting.

Death and posthumous reputation
Salinas was recognized by the city of his birth, Bastrop, Texas in 1960, when he
was fifty years old. He had a solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio
in 1962. His work was widely published by the New York Graphic Society, which
added to his national reputation. In 1967 his work illustrated a book titled
Bluebonnets and Cactus that was published in Austin.

Salinas died on April 18, 1973, after a brief illness. He was memorialized in
the City of Austin with Porfirio Salinas Day in 1973. Ruth Goddard wrote a book
titled Porfirio Salinas that was published two years after his death. There is a
Youth Art Exhibition showcasing work by K-12 students, named after the artist,
held each year in Bastrop. In celebration of the centennial of Salinas' birth,
the Witte Museum mounted an exhibition titled Porfirio Salinas: Painting South
Texas that opened on October 16, 2010, and ran to March 20, 2011.

Artistic production
The professional career of Porfirio Salinas stretched to more than forty years.
According to the art historian Jeffrey Morseburg, he is estimated to have
painted between two and three thousand works. His work is divided among a number
of subjects, but Hill Country landscapes of the Texas bluebonnets predominate.
The bluebonnet landscape has remained eternally popular with both collectors of
historic Texas paintings and contemporary artists. Salinas also painted many
scenes of Texas red oak trees in the autumn and prickly pear cactus. There were
also scenes of the Texas desert in the Texas Panhandle and of arid West Texas.
Salinas made trips to Mexico and painted rural Mexican villages and the
volcanoes that are south of Mexico City. For Mexican American audiences, Salinas
painted small scenes of bullfights, cockfights and Mexican fandangos.

Personal life
Salinas married Maria Bonillas, a Mexican woman who worked for the Mexican
National Railways, in San Antonio in 1943. They had a single child, Christina
Maria Salinas, who was born in 1945. Maria Bonillas Salinas helped manage her
husband's career. The Salinas home and studio was located at 2723 Buena Vista
Street in San Antonio. It consists of a small stone home with a detached studio.

Grace Lai (1927-2010) Watercolor Painted of Beijing China Motorola Office while

    1 in stock

This piece came from the estate of one of the Head Executives of I think most of
Asian Motorola which is headquartered out of Chicago where Grace Lai was from.
She was most likely flown to Asia, I believe this is the Beijing Building, for
this comission. It measures 23"x 30". It was rolled up at one point so I will
likely roll it up for shipping but not too tightly unless the buyer has a major
objection to that. NO issues with painting.

Grace Lai painted downtown Chicago in concrete and steel bloom, for two decades
producing vibrant montages of skyline-shaping buildings as they climbed.

An "on-site" artist who didn't seriously take up painting until nearly 60, Mrs.
Lai donned a hard hat and was unafraid to board construction elevators for rides
high into the sky to complete her work. In winter she'd wrap herself in plastic
garbage bags and substitute rubbing alcohol for water in her paints, so they
wouldn't freeze.

"She just really captured the essence of the dynamic nature of construction,"
said Tom Broderick, executive director of the Construction Safety Council in
Hillside, which has about 100 of Mrs. Lai's paintings on display. "The craft
workers will feel the loss of Grace. She really cared about the industry and the
people who worked in it."

Until her husband, Harry, died in 1985, Mrs. Lai was essentially an artist's
assistant. He maintained a studio on Kinzie Street in the building that now
houses Harry Caray's restaurant, producing signs that graced everything from
theater marquees to train stations.

He was also a fine artist, and on every wedding anniversary, which fell on
Valentine's Day, he gave his wife a painting of a rose.

Mrs. Lai did prep work and handled the books at her husband's business. While
she dabbled in drawing and painting, her husband always told her she needed to
learn the artist's trick of perspective and made her promise she'd one day go to
art school.

So when he died, she enrolled at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Each
day she took an uncrowded, early morning bus to her classes so she'd have room
for her art materials.

She got off at LaSalle and Adams streets in front of a construction site. With
time to kill, she pulled out a pencil and sketched the action.

"The developers liked it so much they hired her to develop a documentation of
the progression of their buildings," her son said.

Thus the craft of construction became the primary subject of her art. Working in
watercolor or pen and ink, she became a familiar sight at construction projects
around town. Laborers stopped by to chat with the gregarious artist, asking if
they had been sketched in that day, sometimes buying work that bore their
likeness.

In addition to her work on display at the headquarters of the Construction
Safety Council, a longtime patron, Mrs. Lai's paintings are part of the
corporate collection at BP (formerly Amoco) and Northwestern Memorial Hospital,
her son said.

The daughter of immigrants from the Chinese region of Canton, the former Grace
Lee moved frequently in her youth as her family followed her father's various
restaurants. She graduated from Schurz High School in Chicago.

For many years, she was the Sunday school superintendent at Chinese Christian
Union Church in Chinatown.

She kept painting until only recently, working on projects including the Trump
Tower.

"If I lose myself in painting, that's good," she told the Tribune in 2002, still
vibrant as she neared 75.

Myrtle Lillian Stedman (1908-2007) 1931 Houston Texas Watercolor of Southern woman of color Feeding chickens. This is a really great watercolor from 1931 when she was living in Houston Texas and attending the Houston Museum of Fine Arts School. I personally find it extremely refreshing to find a picture from this era depicting a woman of color just "doing her thing" in a non derogatory fashion. 9.25" x 11.5" sight in a 15.5" x 18" frame. No issues with painting or frame. It's behind museum glass. It came with a note that I seem to have lost but it was just a pre-internet explanation of the importance of the artist with notes of when it was reframed behind museum glass. Myrle is more famous for her New Mexico landscapes, I personally find this one very interesting and refreshing. Myrtle Stedman was known as an “Artist in Adobe,” designing, building, and remodeling adobe homes under a contractor’s license. She was also a well-know artist whose academic training started in 1927 when she was a student in the Houston Museum of Fine Arts school. c1980 Bob white Quail Watercolor by Anita Diebel. Very nice watercolor from the seventies or 80's. 13.75" framed 9.5" sight. No issues or damage. ART has always been part of my life. It is my personal means of expression, of reaching out, of sharing my world and the wonder I find within it. The marvels of nature infuse my work, whether realistic or abstract. I am blessed, now, to live by the sea, where endless horizons meet marvelous sunrises and the sound of the gull, the heron, the crane mingle with the music of wind whistling in the palms. Every turn in my life brings new inspiration. My art is a delightful journey of never ending exploration. I find joy in each experience and delight when the viewer findS Something within my work that reaches out to them. I will never paint all the things that call to me but I shall surely try. Enjoy Anita Diebel is recognized for her sensitive water-media and collage paintings that resonate with layers of color and texture. An intuitive painter, her work evolves from an inner spirit as she responds to the interaction of colors and shapes, line and rhythm. Each painting is the combination of many layers: painted, collaged, obscured, found, hidden, enhanced and melded into the whole as the many events in our lives serve to make us who we are, a combination of that which has gone before, that which we experience and that of which we dream. Diebel's paintings hang in private and corporate collections throughout the US and abroad. Her work has been honored with awards at local, national and international levels. She has attained signature status in Texas Watercolor Society, Southwest Watercolor Society and Western Federation of Watercolor Society. b41

Fleisch didn't do a lot of portraits, I've only seen s few others. One of which
brought $6100 on eBay in 2013. This piece is estate fresh, has never been
offered anywhere until now since it was purchased from the artist.

Frame measures 31"x 19", it's the original frame Made in Italy with 78061
sticker on it coinciding with the number on the back of the painting. Canvas is
24" x 12". Both the painting and the frame are flawless. This is one of his
earlier works c.1970's, also one of his better works in my opinion. He's well
listed and has brought some very high prices at auction even before he passed
away in 2008.

Ken Fleisch

(American, 1943-2008)

Ken Fleischs' paintings are stark, compelling and deceptively simple in their
appearance. Flawless in its detail and realism, Fleischs work reaches the core
of life in an almost classical fashion.

Born in Texas on November 4, 1943, Fleischspent his early years
experiencing a wide perspective of life throughout the United
States and Europe as the son of an Air Force officer. Fleischs art education is
a combination of formal training in both American and European universities with
exacting practical experience gained through private study and joint projects
with internationally known artists.

A self-described realist, he often draws inspiration from his native
state of Texas, yet his paintings transcend geographical boundaries, touching
the core of life in an almost classical fashion. His evocative paintings are
more than mere reflections of reality: they are a means by which he shares
philosophy and emotion. Using the commonplace to convey the complex, he often
uses old pottery, artifacts, and icons for his stark and still lifes, which many
find compelling.

Fleisch began painting landscapes then moved on to architecture and
buildings and eventually was drawn inside to long forgotten objects sitting on
shelves. Fleisch now paints still lifes exclusively. He is interested in the
convergence of cultures and the stories behind the objects he paints.

Ken Fleisch's award winning work has been featured extensively in regional and
national publications and his paintings are in major private and public
collections across the country. The wide recognition of Ken Fleischs' art on a
national level, the popularity of his print series and the wide diversity of his
collectors, from Bob Dylan to CBS Television, can only underscore the depth and
integrity of his work.

Richard Maitland (1928 - 2014) Miniature train traveling towards silo oil on board. 9" x 12" painting in a 10" x 13" frame, no issues with painting or frame. Signed Maitland bottom left. Richard Maitland (1928 - 2014) He shared the stage and partied with Marilyn, exchanged correspondences and artwork with Jackie O., and introduced The Twist to India. The son of a New York City truck driver and Pinos Altos gold miner's daughter, dancer and artist Richard Maitland was born in Bisbee, Arizona. He spent his formative years—and much of his life, for that matter—on the road. In the year of the Great Depression, his family moved to San Francisco. That's where he got his feet wet as a dancer—performing in his first production at the age of 8. Before settling in New Mexico in the mid-’60s, he worked in movies and Broadway productions with the likes of Ethel Merman and Richard Burton. He taught and performed ballet in India for six years with support from Indira Gandhi. That's also where he started showcasing his artwork, as well as where he met Jacqueline Kennedy, who fell in love with his paintings and became a collector. Those colorful memories inform and consume Maitland's artwork and his world. He is a self-proclaimed nostalgist, who in an interview with the Alibi in 2011 said about himself: "I've been living in the past since I was a kid.”He is a performer and storyteller of the highest degree, and it's an exercise in futility to draw a line between the man and his nostalgic surroundings; they define him, and he embodies them. It's also hard to put a stylistic label on Maitland's work. A self-taught artist, his pieces run the gamut from surrealism to folk art, always inhabited by complex and personal narratives. He uses doll parts, bones, feathers, old photos of himself—just about anything he can get his hands on to convey his messages. His ideas are dark, grotesque, whimsical, beautiful and bittersweet. Along with a quality of vivacious celebration for a life fully lived, there is often an infinite sadness in his work. There is an undercurrent of sociopolitical commentary persists in much of Maitland's work. "I make comments on politics and ," says Maitland. "I'm very much a secular humanist. I hate fanaticism, and I hate bigotry and narrow-mindedness. I love nature and animals. And I think love is what rules the world."

c1850 Portrait of a Young woman Oil on Canvas in incredible frame. This piece is incredibly vivid more than shown. It was professionally restored in 2004. They are very descriptive about what they did, it doesn't sound like it had any holes or anything significant but it sounds like they did it right and I bet it cost a few grand to do this job as this type of work doesn't come cheap. I'm including the folder I got with the painting. The painting measures 13 3/8" x 15.25" framed with a 10" x 8" canvas.tw194

Dewey Bradford (1896-1985) Austin Texas Landscape c1920's Oil on Canvas Board.
9" x 12" painting in a 14.5" x 17.5" original frame. This painting is about
85-100 years old with no significant issues to painting or frame.

Dewey Bradford was the founder of The Country Store Gallery, Austin, Texas. In
1939, Porfirio Salinas began working with Dewey Bradford (1896-1985), one of the
great characters of Texas art. Bradford was a second-generation dealer whose
family operated the Bradford Paint Company in Austin, where they sold art
supplies, framed artwork, restored paintings and hung artists work. Salinas was
struggling when he met Bradford, but the older man took the young artist under
his wing and began to sell his work reliably, even though the prices that people
would pay for a painting were still low due to the lingering effects of the
Great Depression.

Bradford was a born salesman with a gift for storytelling, and truth be told, a
bit of embroidery. The relationship between Bradford and Salinas was often
rocky, but it was to last the rest of the artists life and give him a modest
sense of loyalty and security, things which are all too rare in the art world.
While Bradford could be critical of his work, Salinas knew that he had a dealer
who encouraged him, believed in him and was not shy about singing his praises to
anyone who entered Bradford's store on Guadalupe Street.
