His work has been described as being ‘Contemporary in Traditional Native Design. He has an Associate of Fine Arts Degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts and a BA from the California College of Art and Design. Ken is known for his beautiful and intricately inlaid jewelry creations using semiprecious gemstones and cutting-edge designs. When he sits down to make a piece, the exact pattern of the inlay comes as he places one stone at a time and the piece takes on a life of its own. Through his work, he wants to convey the beauty and resilience of his pueblo ancestry. Many of the pieces in his inlay process take on the texture, feel, and look of a village, particularly multi-storied Taos Pueblo. Each piece is made entirely by Ken from start to finish. “I design my pieces with inlay to look and feel like a village or pueblo building. I call this my pueblo village design inlay. Size 6.5 ring Victor Coochwytewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century. A master of overlay jewelry and a pillar of his community, his work helped define the standards and aesthetics that Hopi jewelers continue to follow today. His career, which spanned more than 60 years, earned him national recognition, including being named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. Born on June 7, 1922, in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Victor was a member of the Waterhouse Clan. He first learned the basics of silversmithing in 1940 under the guidance of Paul Saufkie. But his early career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served with distinction in the South Pacific. A member of the 167th Combat Military Police and later the 5309th Infantry Division under General Frank Merrill (Merrills Marauders), Victor saw heavy combat in Burma and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Victor returned to Hopi and became one of the first students in the now-legendary Veterans Classes established under the G.I. Bill. Taught by Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie, these classes marked the beginning of a new era in Hopi silversmithing. Victor not only mastered the overlay technique but innovated within itintroducing a background texturing method inspired by leatherwork that became a defining feature of Hopi overlay jewelry. Victor‘s designs, executed in both sterling silver and gold, are known for their precision, spiritual depth, and elegant symbolism. Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world. In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work, he once said with characteristic humility. He attributed the success of both his crops and his craft to blessings from the Creator. “When you pray, you should pray for all things, and in return, all things are benefited. Nothing can be accomplished without prayer. Victor retired from silversmithing and farming in 2006 and continued to live with his family at Hopi until his passing on July 3, 2011, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on in the work of his descendants and in the broader community of Hopi artists who follow the path he helped shape. Size 6 ring LEO YAZZIE Leo Yazzie has been designing and creating fine jewelry for more than 30 years. Born and raised at Black Mesa on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, the influence of the land and his culture is a part of each piece of his contemporary and sophisticated jewelry. Leo uses both gold and silver to create jewelry with a unique combination of traditional and contemporary designs. “The inspiration for many of my designs came from watching my grandmother, mother and other women in the family weaving rugs. They told me their designs came from Spider. Now, I make designs inspired by the patterns they wove. Leos patterns vary, from a delicate cutout border with intricate detail to bold geometrics. It might be a gold panel with a geometric motif overlaid on a silver pendant; a cut-out stepped pattern encircling a stone; or a lightning shaped band on a ring. Whatever the pattern, the effect is sophisticated and elegant. The classic use of turquoise and coral is a favorite combination of Leos. The coral may range from pale pink to a very deep red. Leo uses turquoise of the highest quality, sometimes rare pieces from famous mines that have been closed for years. “I love working with quality stones, says Leo. To guarantee hed always have the best materials to work with, Leo has collected high quality stones from gem shows and traders over the years. In addition to turquoise and coral, Leo uses other semi-precious stones from around the world like sugilite, lapis, gaspeite, white opals and more. Sugilite has gained in popularity since its introduction in the 1980s. Found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, this stone with its deep rich purple to soft lavender color works beautifully with turquoise, or on its own. Leo enjoys pairing it with the fire in white opals. Leos settings are all handmade, often built up layer-by-layer. Designs are sawed out and appliquéd. Rich multi-colored side inlay will often be added to highlight a larger stone or add accent colors to the design. He uses channel inlay on some pieces, with the stones precisely cut flush with each other, so that they almost appear to be one stone. Some pieces will have a sculptural inlay, where each stone is cut and shaped, then fitted together. Leos avant-garde work is fitting for todays contemporary fashions. His attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in each piece and reflects his willingness to take the time to let a design emerge. “I enjoy what I do and I like to take my time with each piece, says Leo. He usually works on several pieces at a time, working with one and then setting it aside to work on another, or taking one of his long walks. “I usually work for three hours each morning and then leave the pieces alone, says Leo. His long walks are important; they reconnect him with the land and life surrounding him. The care and time that Leo takes fabricating each of his pieces has resulted in his winning enough awards and ribbons to fill two large boxes. Size 7 Ring Chief Shatka Bear-Step (1898-1980; otherwise known as Richard Spencer) who was both an accomplished and well known silversmith. Not only was Shatka Bear-Step a silversmith but he was also passionate about the Appaloosa horse breed. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show." His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.

Size 8 ring Harry Morgan is known for his classic revival style jewelry with its smooth, soft, antique finishes and classic design. He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style. The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM. He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him. Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Brother Henry Morgan is known for his exceptional sandcast pieces. Linda Marble, his sister, was also known for her sandcast pieces. She passed away in 2004. Of his five children, three have taken up silversmithing. Harry Morgan won awards at every major Indian art show, and had an exhibit of his creations at the Heard Museum in 2007, a year before he passed way.

Appears unworn Below is the Artists Bio A family heritage six generations in the making... I am a sixth generation Navajo silversmith born and raised in the great state of New Mexico. My maternal clan is Ts‘ah Yask‘idnii (Sagebrush Hill) with my paternal clan being Dibe Lizhini (Black Sheep). I‘m originally from Crownpoint, currently residing in Rio Rancho with my beautiful wife Melvina and our two lovely daughters. JDM_2021_HGIF&M (3).JPG My third Great-Grandfather, Gray Horse was the first silversmith in our family. His son, my second Great-Grandfather Big Horse followed suit. His daughter, my Great-Grandmother Nosbah and her husband Cutnose Charley, were third generation smiths. Fourth in line was my amazing Grandmother Louise Charley Morgan, whom my dad Harry Morgan credited as the sole inspiration for his style of jewelry making. It was a style that focused heavily on sandcasting and stamp work. Turquoise was used mostly in freeform settings which gave the pieces a beautiful balance. Although I came from a long line of silversmiths, I really had no inclination to follow in their footsteps. That changed during a golfing trip in 2005. My oldest brother Kelly encouraged me to take up silversmithing to help continue on our long standing family tradition. Shortly after I built a wooden bench out of scrap lumber, began purchasing jewelry making tools and started practicing with copper. One year later, with the guidance from my dad, my first silver project making rings and bracelets was underway. Sadly, he passed away in 2007 leaving me with the difficult but rewarding task of learning by trial and error. In 2009 I participated in my first major art show at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market, winning a First Place ribbon for a sterling silver jewelry box. The following year I made another jewelry box that was awarded an Honorable Mention ribbon at the Heard Guild Indian Fair & Market in Phoenix, AZ. I‘ve been fortunate enough to attend both ever since. In doing so, there have been many valuable lessons and experiences gained by participating in them. The summer of 2016 was definitely a highlight as I had the incredible experience of creating several custom made pieces for UFC legend, Cowboy Cerrone and his coaching staff. I strive to make unique, one of a kind jewelry. Whether its fabricating with commercial sheet and wire or casting and forging them by hand, the desire to create legacy art is a true passion. Honoring our elder‘s contributions while setting a path for future generations is a rewarding and worthwhile responsibility. Being a Navajo silversmith is an absolute honor and privilege. Herman Vandever (1964- ) Diné Navajo Nation. He belongs to a family of well-known silversmiths and it seems only natural that he would follow in their footsteps. He often makes his own ingot silver jewelry by melting his silver to roll it out into handmade sheet silver. Started silversmithing in 1989, he was taught by his older sister Esther Wood.
